The Opportunity
Workforce Warriors Inc. is supporting COVE to find an Indigenous Research Assistant through the Indigenous Career Pivot Program. This position offers a competitive salary, wrap around supports, mentoring and more.

The Research Assistant will work at the COVE office at Queen Square at 45 Alderney Dr, B2Y 2T5 Dartmouth, NS and occasionally from the Department of Biology at Dalhousie University located at 6287 Alumni Crescent, B3H 4R2 Halifax, NS.

Research Assistant Responsibilities:

  1. Survey Setup: Identify and build eelgrass surveying setup potentially including remote surface vehicle and underwater camera.
  2. Field Sampling: Conduct imagery surveying in summer 2025.
  3. Eelgrass survey data analysis using Python or R and imagery analysis software with limited guidance and supervision.
  4. Causal Factor Analysis: With support from Dr. Kristina Boerder, conduct a causal factor analysis to determine potential causal factors affecting eelgrass extent and density.
  5. Literature Review of Economic Eelgrass Benefits: Conduct an independent literature review summarizing potential and data-backed economic benefits of eelgrass.
  6. White Paper Drafting: Support the preparation of a White Paper detailing eelgrass ecology in Nova Scotia and how healthy meadows benefit the provincial economy.
  7. Presentation Slide Drafting: Support the project management team by drafting presentations slides for NetZero milestone delivery.

Research Assistant Requirements:

  1. Minimum bachelor’s degree in biology, environmental science, or degree in ocean technology.
  2. Experience in data analysis and programming skills in Python or R.
  3. Able to work in the field.
  4. Able to swim.
  5. Ideally has a valid driver’s license.
