Research Assistant I NDD Research Program

Summary
Research Assistants work in various departments within clinics, laboratories, offices, and research sites (e.g., long-term care homes).

The primary role of the Research Assistant I includes providing essential support to research projects, including data collection, organization, and administrative tasks. Tasks may involve survey administration, data processing, following research protocols, screening participants, and managing samples and materials. The role supports the research team and Principal Investigators and may contribute to funding and grant activities.

Research may occur in clinical, community, or laboratory settings, with tasks varying accordingly.

This is an entry-level position with potential for progression to level II and research coordination roles.

Duties/Responsibilities

Due to the variable nature of the position, this list serves as a general guide only.

Administrative Duties (60%)
  • Perform general office tasks including filing, mailing, photocopying, and managing supplies.
  • Organize office/lab spaces and maintain calendars.
  • Develop correspondence, reports, invoices, and forms to support research activities.
  • Prepare materials for webinars, meetings, and conferences.
  • Manage databases and coordinate communication with team and external partners.
  • Assist with research ethics submissions and study protocol registration.
Research Duties (40%)
  • Assist with data collection, transcription, quality control, and entry.
  • Compile and analyze basic statistical data for reports.
  • Interact with departments and stakeholders to support research activities.
  • Conduct literature searches and assist with manuscript preparation.
  • Support recruitment and coordination of study participants, including screening, scheduling, and obtaining consent.
  • Administer surveys and facilitate participant compensation, including travel as needed.
  • Prepare routine media and reagents for laboratory tasks.
Responsibilities

All staff must prioritize safety and confidentiality, complying with policies related to patient and employee confidentiality and safety. Report breaches or risks promptly.

Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skills
  • Undergraduate degree or 1 year of relevant experience, or equivalent.
  • TCPS CORE 2 certification preferred (to be completed within 2 weeks of hire).
  • Basic computer skills; experience with reference management software is an asset.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to multitask.
  • Good problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.
