GenAI tool: 2 full-time summer; 1 part-time yearlong (10 hours/week)

Overview:

McGill University is seeking students to undertake research with CLEO (Community Legal Education Ontario / Éducation juridique communautaire Ontario). CLEO is a community legal clinic that develops legal rights education and information to help people understand and exercise their legal rights.

Researchers will test pleadings and affidavits produced by a GenAI pilot tool to compare them to those generated by CLEO’s Guided Pathways. The purpose of the tool is to help hypothetical users of the Guided Pathways to tell their stories to the court in a more compelling and coherent way. Work will start as soon as possible and be performed remotely.

Key responsibilities:

  • Produce and review GenAI-generated legal narrative according to a strict set of criteria to assess the performance of different prompts and models in a legal context.
  • Prompt inputs and outputs and note errors in a content management system.
  • Propose prompts that improve the outputs, using legal tests and reasoning.
  • Prepare test reports detailing problems and explaining proposed solutions.

Qualifications:

  • Excellent reading comprehension and attention to detail, including demonstrated proficiency spotting errors and discrepancies.
  • Ability to identify and describe patterns and trends across multiple affidavits or pleadings.
  • Familiarity with basic legal research using texts and case law.
  • Proven ability to work both independently and as part of a small project team.
  • Capacity to review potentially distressing information (for example, about family violence).
  • Current student in the faculty of law.

Assets:

  • Interest in learning and working with new software, but no prior experience with GenAI is required.
  • Experience demonstrating patience and focus while doing repetitive tasks.
  • Prior work with database applications.
  • Writing or editing experience.

To apply:

  • File a cover letter and your resume by 23 April at 3PM. In your letter, please describe your schedule and availability to undertake this work.

We thank everyone for their interest but will only contact candidates invited to participate in the following interview process:

  • 60-minute skills test online, simulating the work that will be required.
  • 15-minute interview via Zoom.
