Position Summary

BCIT’s MAKE+ Applied Research department is currently seeking a regular, full-time (1.0 FTE ) Research Analyst specializing in mixed methods human factors research. This technical position is responsible for supporting and conducting applied research involving human subjects, with a focus on assistive technologies and medical devices, and related duties within the department.

Duties & Responsibilities

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Supports, as a team participant, the Dean, Director, Project Leader, or Research Associate in the technical aspects of planning, organizing and conducting applied research project(s) in the BCIT Technology Centre, within the incumbent’s field of technical expertise. Assists in ensuring that projects are conducted with the most effective use of current technology.
  • Assists team members in developing project proposals for potential sponsors (industrial clients or granting agencies).
  • When projects are established, performs hands-on technical work using appropriate hardware and/or software, in laboratory, field, or other settings, as required. Shares responsibility for technical issues with the Project Leader and Research Associate. May provide technical supervision to other junior project staff and students as required.
  • Contributes to or prepares project documentation, including progress reports, manuals and final detailed technical reports, as required by MAKE+ clients and/or BCIT management. In addition, may prepare or present or assist in demonstrations, patent applications, journal publications, and presentations to conferences and seminars. This may include participation in workshops for the purpose of disseminating research findings and emerging technical issues to the BCIT community and/or industry. May participate in client training programs.
  • Assumes or shares responsibility for a specialty area of interest pertinent to the strategic research directions of the unit. Keeps up to date with current research in the specialty area. Assumes technical advisory roles for departmental research projects requiring this expertise.
  • Specific duties include: conducting reviews of academic literature and standards; conducting research ethics applications; conducting and supporting focus groups and interviews, including logistics for research participants such as recruitment and scheduling; conducting data transcription, coding and analysis.
  • Maintains professional contact with others engaged in related research at the provincial, national and/or international level, in order to keep abreast with current research directions, technological developments, and to identify new project opportunities. Maintains active membership in relevant professional societies. Furthers professional expertise.
  • Performs general/administrative duties as required within the department, including participating in staff meetings and information sessions, providing management information, and assisting with acquisition, installation, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Maintains a general knowledge of the aims and goals of BCIT , the educational programs in place, the proposed new programs, the expertise and capabilities of other faculty, staff and students, the equipment and other resources relevant to the incumbent’s field of expertise.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS :

  • A Bachelor’s Degree or Institute of Technology Diploma in an area suitable for the work to be performed, and 4 years relevant work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of current and emerging technologies and trends and applied research experience in one or more of the respective unit’s identified strategic technologies.
  • Technically competent in the development and implementation of a broad base of technical solutions utilizing the most current technology.
  • All Research Analysts require: an ability to work effectively in a collegial manner within a team environment; excellent verbal and written communication skills; and compliance with institute policies regarding confidentiality and ownership of intellectual property.

Salary Range

Salary Range Salary Range: $65,187-$89,242 per annum.

Additional Salary Information

Salary prorated based on percentage and term of appointment. Salary based on education, experience and placement criteria as outlined in the Collective Agreement.
