Your role

CBC is looking for experienced and dynamic reporters to join us. In this on-call role you will have the opportunity to experience a variety of shifts ranging from early mornings to late nights and weekends and everything in between. If you are passionate about telling stories in local communities, come and join us.

In this role, you will research, gather, package and present stories for audiences on all platforms for CBC News and/or for regional CBC News programs and current affairs. You could be responsible for reporting for all platforms, including both live and taped storytelling. Some days you could be working with a videographer or another CBC colleague. On other days, you’ll be gathering on your own.

You’ll operate independently under the direction of a (producer, senior producer, EP). You’re a self-starter and you’re joining a team where collaboration and communication are essential within your local team and with colleagues across CBC.

You are committed to our audiences and understand the importance of reaching new audiences through your story pitches, the people you choose to interview, and the techniques you use to present stories.

You understand the diverse and changing population across regions and the importance of reflecting underrepresented communities and equity-deserving groups in our content.

You care about the people you work with and live and promote an inclusive and respectful work culture and have a deep appreciation for different perspectives, opinions and experiences.

You will ensure that all CBC journalistic standards are met, while providing fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful and immediate coverage to the communities we serve.

These are on-call roles, and you will be working a variety of shifts that could include early mornings, evenings or weekends. While we are looking for experienced journalists, we will set you up for success by providing training on CBC policies, workflows, and tools.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Pitch, and provide research for each story.
  • Analyze facts and information, distilling information under tight deadlines and across multiple platforms.
  • Find relevant people to interview and maintain a pool of sources/contacts, including sources from underserved communities.
  • Write and produce content for all platforms enhanced with visuals, interactive elements and graphics.
  • Provide ideas or content for programming across all platforms.
  • Present content on-air in a live environment or on tape.
  • Upload content to a variety of systems, adhering to appropriate naming conventions and tagging principles.
  • Stay informed on current affairs and how it affects the (local) community.
  • Respond quickly to breaking news.

What you bring to the role:

  • As proven in your attached demo reel; portfolio or website
    • Ability to generate, pitch and pursue strong, original stories
    • Track record of connecting with local communities
    • Demonstrated professional experience using various news platforms, including digital, social, radio and television
    • Experience in gathering and editing visual elements, including photography and video; audio; text; digital interactives and social
    • Ability to present stories live on-air, within the studio or in the field, and voicing packaged items
  • Ability to work in high-pressure environments with considerable deadline constraints and under public scrutiny
  • Ability to work independently, with superior problem-solving skills and objectivity
  • Ability to forge positive team relationships where you value collaboration, transparency, respect and inclusiveness.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the values of diversity and inclusion.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts including early mornings, evenings, weekends, stat holidays and overtime
  • Three years of previous related experience in a multiplatform newsroom
  • Ability to communicate fluently in French is an asset
  • A university degree or college diploma in journalism, video production or related fields is preferred

Operational requirements:

  • You will be expected to gather audio, photography and video primarily an iPhone; edit on Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid MediaCentral or Dalet and will use iNews for content creation and distribution.
  • You will be working with an online content management system to edit, manage and publish content.
  • You will need to travel from the workplace to news conferences, events and interviews off-site and in the community. Possessing a valid driver’s license and having a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada’s insurance company, is preferred however alternative means of independent transportation can be considered.
  • You are required to work in the CBC News (location) office; and there is an expectation to be in the field covering a range of stories including some which are traumatic.
