Your role

CBC seeks experienced and dynamic reporters for on-call roles. You will work various shifts, including early mornings, late nights, weekends, and more. If passionate about local stories, consider joining us.

You will research, gather, package, and present stories across all platforms for CBC News and regional programs. Responsibilities include both live and taped reporting, sometimes solo, sometimes with a team.

You will operate independently under supervision from a producer, senior producer, or executive producer, and collaborate effectively within your team and across CBC.

You will aim to reach diverse audiences, reflect underrepresented communities, and uphold journalistic standards of fairness, accuracy, and immediacy.

Core Responsibilities
  1. Pitch and research stories.
  2. Analyze facts quickly for multiple platforms.
  3. Identify and maintain sources, including from underserved communities.
  4. Create content with visuals, interactive elements, and graphics.
  5. Contribute ideas for programming.
  6. Present stories live or on tape.
  7. Upload content following naming and tagging conventions.
  8. Stay informed on current affairs affecting the community.
  9. Respond promptly to breaking news.
What you bring to the role
  • Proven storytelling skills via demo reel, portfolio, or website.
  • Ability to generate and pitch original stories.
  • Experience connecting with local communities.
  • Experience across digital, social, radio, and TV news platforms.
  • Skills in visual and audio gathering and editing.
  • Ability to present stories live in-studio or in the field.
  • Work well under pressure and deadlines.

Operational requirements
  • Gathering audio, photography, and video primarily via iPhone; editing with Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid MediaCentral, or Dalet; content management with iNews.
  • Travel for news coverage; a valid driver’s license preferred.
  • Work in CBC News office and in the field, including potentially traumatic stories.
