POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Globeand Mail is seeking an economics reporter to cover government and fiscal policy in Ottawa.

To be successful, you will have a firm grip on economics, a keen eye for policy and a drive to reveal how business interacts with the federal government and vice versa. You will understand politics and the day-to-day rhythms of Ottawa, but cover them through a lens that is economic. The ideal candidate will connect policymaking to the people, companies and regions that are affected by government decisions.

Reporting to the politics and economy editor, this is an opportunity to join a collaborative team of reporters who cover economics and business, working out of The Globe’s Ottawa bureau, with whom you will work closely. You will be expected to file a variety of stories regularly: source-based scoops; breaking and scheduled news; enterprise reporting; and features that bring economic and fiscal policy to life.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Cover breaking and live economic and fiscal policy news from Ottawa.
  • Frequently pitch fresh, compelling story ideas
  • Develop and maintain sources in government and business
  • Write clearly and concisely on deadline
  • Work with colleagues across the department and wider newsroom to generate story ideas and enrich The Globe’s coverage
  • Think beyond standard storytelling formats and participate in Globe subscriber events
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • At least five years’ experience as a reporter in a daily news organization
  • Solid news judgment with a track record of enterprise work
  • Ability to translate fiscal and economic policy into engaging prose for The Globe’s audience
  • Familiarity with political reporting and economics
  • Strong writing with versatile range - from hard news to human-interest feature to explanatory
  • Comfortable working in a variety of formats, including live blogs, newsletters, video and audio

This position is based in the Ottawa office and requires a minimum of two days a week in office.
