Job Description

The Hamilton Spectator seeks an enthusiastic, experienced temporary full-time Reporter skilled in storytelling for both digital and print platforms. The successful journalist will be a self-starter capable of delivering a wide range of compelling stories relevant to our readers. Proven ability in web filing under tight deadlines is essential.

This is a 1-year contract position.

Salary: $51,365.83 to $74,265.12 annually

• Coordinate with the local news editor to produce interesting, local, and newsworthy stories in traditional and innovative formats.
• Produce high-quality, trustworthy journalism with strong reporting and research skills, including data analysis.
• Create engaging multimedia content for the website and social media, including videos and audio.
• Travel within the community to cover events outside of structured hours, including evenings and weekends.

Qualifications

• Diploma or degree in Journalism or related field.
• Self-motivated with good news judgment.
• Proficient in social media and online posting skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, following Canadian Press Style.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage time and prioritize tasks.
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, digital-first environment with tight deadlines.
• Team-oriented with the ability to build professional relationships.
• Experience in data analysis, mapping, photography, video, and broadcasting are assets.
• Must have access to a reliable vehicle and valid driver's license.
