Job Duties / Qualifications, Skills and Abilities (QSA)

The Business Development Officer is accountable to the Director, Applied Research and Innovation for leading the development, promotion, and implementation of innovative business development strategies to achieve Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s goals to advance our standing in the national post-secondary applied research and innovation market. Applied research revenue generation and new business development relationships are key accountabilities in this position. All relationships will be managed with confidentiality and aligned with Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s labour relations, business strategic planning, policy advice, and budget implementation and planning.

Specific Accountabilities

The incumbent provides leadership in formulating the philosophy, goals, objectives, and policies for business development opportunities for applied research that are consistent with the overall strategic goals of Saskatchewan Polytechnic and in line with those in the Centre for Continuing Education. The Business Development Officer specifically performs the following functions:

Business Development Leadership

  • Plans, coordinates, manages, and promotes clear and comprehensive strategies for seeking out and identifying new external partnerships for applied research and innovation projects.
  • Leads confidential negotiations with partners to ensure continued relevance and makes recommendations as needed.
  • Understands the vision for Saskatchewan Polytechnic and ensures its reflection in all business development and planning activities.
  • Develops partnerships with key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provides direction in implementing policies, guidelines, processes, and practices that govern all aspects of business development strategies in alignment with organizational requirements.
  • Manages, monitors, and tracks internal and external client relationships for applied research and innovation.
  • Promotes funding opportunities to clients.
  • Manages initial contractual and agreement needs.
  • Works closely with the Business Development Officer in the Centre for Continuing Education to ensure initiative alignment.

Relationship Management Internal

  • Establishes and fosters key relationships with internal partners such as school leadership (deans, associate deans, program heads, research centre directors, research chairs, and managers), donor and alumni relations, and administrative services partners.
  • Oversees development and implementation of business development opportunities that engage and inspire internal audiences in the pursuit of Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s mission, vision, goals, and objectives.
  • Shows strong leadership presence and accessibility, enabling and encouraging open-mindedness and bold thinking, generating new ideas that continually enhance the organization, the division, and the department.
  • Builds a culture of entrepreneurial spirit, curiosity, and experimentation in the team.
  • Creates a safe environment for risk-taking, learning, and supporting others through mistakes. Where needed, removes barriers and builds systems and processes that encourage and reward innovative ideas.
  • Demonstrates and coaches others to engage in cross-enterprise collaboration, open and honest relationships, and a respectful understanding of one another.

External

  • Partners with Saskatchewan Polytechnic deans and senior leaders on strategic and tactical business development initiatives that attract and engage a full range of external audiences.
  • Engages in consultations and relationship building with external audiences to support the Associate Vice-President Applied Research and Innovation.
  • Uses collaborative and a strengths-based focus to harness relationships with senior government officials (Federal and Provincial), non-governmental organizations, industry, and private sector business leaders.
  • Develops and maintains formal strategic alliances between Saskatchewan Polytechnic and industry.

People Engagement

  • Ensures a positive, diverse, and inclusive work and learning environment.

Resource Allocation

  • Ensures resource allocation for all activities is aligned with institutional policies, procedures, and priorities. Assists other parts of the enterprise to identify operating and capital requirements pertinent to business development activities.
  • Develops innovative solutions to resource challenges while ensuring alignment with, and support of Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s strategic plans.
  • Provides regular reports to the Director, Applied Research and Innovation and ad hoc reports to senior leadership as required.

Duties Based out of one of the four Saskatchewan Polytechnic locations (Moose Jaw, Prince Albert, Regina, or Saskatoon), this position will work closely with the Director of the Office of Applied Research and Innovation, Research Centre Directors, and Research Chairs with external partners on strategic and confidential initiatives. The applied research and innovation department facilitates all applied research activities at Saskatchewan Polytechnic to encourage the commercialization of newly developed technologies and to capitalize on the highly qualified and skilled Saskatchewan Polytechnic personnel to help grow the Saskatchewan economy.

As a member of the Office of Applied Research and Innovation leadership team, this position will lead best practices to engage in business development, partnerships, and strategy execution with external partners. The incumbent will be expected to work closely with the Business Development Officer in the Centre for Continuing Education.

Required Qualifications, Skills and Abilities (QSA)

A Bachelor’s degree in Business, Applied Science, Engineering, and/or a Master of Business Administration from a recognized university or post-secondary institution would be an asset or an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered as related to the expertise of applied research and innovation centers. You will show progressively more responsible business development roles, bring a reputation for working collaboratively across different lines of business, and experience in forging business partnerships, formulating business cases, and integrating new and innovative business solutions or technologies. Your knowledge or experience in higher education and training, coupled with your aptitude for business and product development will be valued in this role.
