The Remote Certified Primary Care Nurse practices autonomously, utilizing an extended scope of practice defined by various levels of regulatory guidance, including provincial legislation, BC College of Nurses and Midwives scope of practice, standards, and code of ethics; Nurse and Nurse Practitioners of BC decision support tools; Island Health policies, procedures, and guidelines; and individual nurse competencies.
This role involves working independently and as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team, providing direct patient care and participating in health promotion activities for groups and individuals in remote communities. The care approach must be community and culturally sensitive, client-focused, and aim to maintain or improve health. Responsibilities include disease prevention, chronic disease management, and acute care across the lifespan, including emergency assessment, treatment, palliative care, health status assessment, and coordination of health services.
Travel may be required, and transportation arrangements must meet Island Health operational requirements, potentially including the use of a personal vehicle.
