Job description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), patient and staff safety is a priority and a shared responsibility. The requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

The Remote Certified Primary Care Nurse practices autonomously, utilizing an extended scope of practice defined by various levels of regulatory guidance, including provincial legislation, BC College of Nurses and Midwives scope of practice, standards, and code of ethics; Nurse and Nurse Practitioners of BC decision support tools; Island Health policies, procedures, and guidelines; and individual nurse competencies.

This role involves working independently and as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team, providing direct patient care and participating in health promotion activities for groups and individuals in remote communities. The care approach must be community and culturally sensitive, client-focused, and aim to maintain or improve health. Responsibilities include disease prevention, chronic disease management, and acute care across the lifespan, including emergency assessment, treatment, palliative care, health status assessment, and coordination of health services.

Travel may be required, and transportation arrangements must meet Island Health operational requirements, potentially including the use of a personal vehicle.

Qualifications: Education, Training, and Experience
  • Remote nursing certification or eligibility to obtain it within one year of hire.
  • Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN(C).
  • Three years of recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Basic Life Support Level 'C' certification, with additional certifications such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Trauma Nursing Core Course preferred.
  • Valid driver's license.

  • Ability to provide client-centered, trauma-informed, and culturally safe care.
  • Competence in initial and ongoing client assessments and evidence-based nursing care.
  • Ability to instruct clients and others on health topics.
  • Knowledge of care planning, care coordination, and community programs and services.
  • Understanding of community health, chronic disease, emergency, geriatric, and palliative nursing practices.
  • Conflict resolution, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Sound judgment, observation, assessment, tact, and empathy.
  • Ability to intervene effectively in crises or difficult situations.
  • Strong communication skills for interprofessional collaboration and respectful workplaces.
  • Effective time and resource management.
  • Self-awareness and commitment to continuous professional development.
  • Ability to incorporate research and evidence-based practices into nursing care.
  • Proficiency with relevant equipment and computer applications.
  • Ability to promote positive change and perform the duties of the position.
  • Use of personal vehicle as required.
