Job description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), patient and staff safety is a priority and a shared responsibility. The continuous improvement of quality and safety is inherent in this position.

The Remote Certified Primary Care Nurse practices autonomously, utilizing an extended scope of practice defined by regulatory guidance, including provincial legislation; BC College of Nurses and Midwives scope of practice, standards, and code of ethics; Nurse and Nurse Practitioners of BC decision support tools; Island Health policies, procedures, and guidelines; and individual nurse competencies.

This role involves working independently and as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team, providing direct patient care and participating in health promotion activities for individuals and groups in remote communities. The care approach must be community and culturally sensitive, focusing on maintaining or improving health. It encompasses disease prevention, chronic disease management, and acute care across the lifespan, including emergency assessment, treatment, palliative care, health status assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation of interventions, and coordination of health services.

Travel may be required, and transportation arrangements must meet Island Health operational requirements, potentially involving the use of a personal vehicle.

Qualifications: Education, Training, and Experience
  1. Remote nursing certification or eligibility to obtain it within one year of hire.
  2. Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN(C).
  3. Three years' recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  4. Basic Life Support Level 'C' certification, with additional certifications such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Trauma Nursing Core Course preferred.
  5. Valid Driver's license.

  • Proficiency in clinical and diagnostic assessments and evidence-based nursing care.
