Job description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), patient and staff safety is a priority and a shared responsibility. Continuous improvement in quality and safety is inherent in this position.

The Remote Certified Primary Care Nurse practices autonomously, utilizing an extended scope of practice defined by various levels of regulatory guidance, including:

  • Provincial legislation
  • BC College of Nurses and Midwives scope of practice, standards, and code of ethics
  • Nurse and Nurse Practitioners of BC decision support tools
  • Island Health policies, procedures, and guidelines
  • Individual nurse competencies

This nurse works both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team, providing direct patient care and engaging in health promotion activities for individuals and groups in remote communities. Care approaches must be community and culturally sensitive, focusing on maintaining or improving health. This includes disease prevention, chronic disease management, and acute care across the lifespan, such as emergency assessment, treatment, and palliative care, along with health status assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, and coordination of health services.

Travel may be required, and transportation arrangements must meet Island Health operational requirements, potentially necessitating the use of a personal vehicle.

Qualifications: Education, Training, and Experience

  • Remote nursing certification or eligibility to obtain it within one year of hire
  • Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN(C)
  • Three years of recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Basic Life Support Level 'C' certification; Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Trauma Nursing Core Course, or equivalent
  • Valid Driver's License

  • Understanding of community health practices, chronic disease management, emergency, geriatric, and palliative nursing within a client-centered approach
  • Conflict resolution, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Sound judgment, observation, assessment skills, tact, and empathy
  • Capability to intervene effectively in crises or difficult situations
  • Effective communication skills across various platforms to support collaborative practice and a respectful work environment
  • Time and resource management skills
  • Self-awareness and commitment to ongoing professional development
  • Ability to incorporate research and evidence-based practices into nursing care
  • Proficiency with related equipment, technology, and computer applications
  • Ability to promote positive change and perform all duties of the position
  • Use of a personal vehicle as required
