Job Description
Position Purpose
The Intake Worker delivers exceptional direct support, assistance and encouragement to Evangeline Residence clients. The Residential Worker provides residents with the resources they require to maximize their potential in body, mind and soul, aligning services with our core values. The role also involves creating a safe and secure environment for residents and visitors.
Accountabilities
- Signs in for shift and reads all logbook entries.
- Enforces house rules, conducts behavior modification discussions, and manages warnings and behavioral contracts.
- Handles admission and orientation for new intakes; reviews house rules with new intake and completes the Triage and Survey Monkey.
- Enters all intakes and discharges on SMIS, processes intake paperwork and uploads documents on SMIS.
- Accurately records day-to-day happenings; maintains logbooks and completes incident reports.
- Monitors resident activities and provides personal, practical and moral support.
- Provides residents with stored medication, completes medication distribution forms, and ensures safe storage and recording of prescribed medication as requested.
- Liaises with internal referral sources and external agencies as needed.
- Makes announcements to residents as needed.
- Puts friendly reminders in place for residents not in the building and follows up accordingly.
- Responds to and directs all telephone inquiries/voicemails appropriately.
- Records facility issues and concerns on the appropriate Work Order/Supply Order document.
- Assists and participates in resident functions on special occasions or activities.
- Places used walkie-talkies on charger at end of shift and turns them off prior to charging.
- Tidies the front desk/intake area throughout the shift.
- Assists residents triaged at level 1 or without a counsellor with necessary resources or referrals.
- Follows rotational tasks posted on the monthly schedule on the Communications Board in the Intake Office.
- Approves overnight passes, curfew extensions and bedrest as required.
- Emergency Plan role: take on role as Fire Captain or Marshall per Emergency Plan during emergencies.
- Updates short and long room sheets after each intake/admission.
- Prints SMIS bed log at end of shift and ensures SMIS, bed roster and logbook match; SMIS queue is up to date.
- Keeps records of bag lunches, late dinner requests and food allergies; updates kitchen board accordingly.
- Announces mealtimes, secures volunteers for tidying up and to say Grace.
- Greets visitors, completes Covid-19 screening, and directs as necessary.
- Assists residents with signing up for television, computer and laundry time; monitors usage and provides support as needed.
- Contacts elevator repair as needed.
- Keeps a record of TTC tokens and keys distributed; confirms remaining tokens/keys before and after shift.
- Mail is checked by management before distribution; mail to be returned to sender if applicable and handed to Intake Supervisor.
- Oversees mealtimes and provides supervision in the dining areas and basement during breakfast, snacks and lunch.
- Distributes clothing and personal hygiene items as requested by residents.
- Carries out wellness checks throughout the building in accordance with policies and procedures.
- Bags/labels residents’ belongings left behind and stores them per policy.
- Provides cleaning/disinfection of beds and prepares for new intake in the absence of housekeeping.
- Completes rounds at set times to address health and safety hazards and ensures residents leave their rooms accordingly.
- Documents all rounds and related activities.
- Distributes late meals, bag lunches, resident food boxes, coffee/tea and snacks as scheduled.
- Cleans resident fridge and ensures expired or non-processed food is stored appropriately.
- Oversees mealtimes and supervision in the dining rooms during meals and snacks.
- Washes trays used by catering when ER cooks are not onsite.
- Empties garbage cans in dining areas as needed and sweeps/mops kitchen areas.
- Distributes clothing and personal hygiene items as requested by residents.
- Ensures shower room is clean and disinfected; liaises with housekeeping as needed.
- Accepts and documents donations in the communication log and stores them in the Donation Room after washing and sorting.
CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT
Internal:
- Reports directly to the Intake Supervisor
- Indirectly reports to the Support Services Supervisor, Assistant Director and/or the Director
- Develops close working relationships with staff across the organization (Housekeeper, Janitors, Counsellor, Housing Worker, Community Follow-Up Worker, Chaplain, Administration and Management Team)
External:
- Establishes and maintains good working relationships with external agencies for referrals.
MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY
- Reports directly to: Director
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Relief position on an as-needed basis.
- Works in a shelter environment with potential interruptions and multitasking.
- May encounter erratic, aggressive, or abusive behavior and odors; may deal with bodily fluids and pests.
EXPOSURE TO HAZARDS
The incumbent may be exposed to moderate to severe injury or illness due to:
- Physical attacks, infectious diseases, toxic chemicals, moving objects, sharp objects
- Electrical hazards and repetitive strain injuries
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES
Required precautions include universal precautions; use of gloves, ear/eye protection, eye wash stations, fume masks where appropriate, and IPAC-aligned masks as needed.
HEALTH AND SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations
- Adhere to the agency’s Health and Safety Program
- Report accidents/injuries/workplace hazards promptly
- Conduct facility security/safety rounds regularly
- Adhere to all Health and Safety Policies of the agency
Education and Experience Qualifications
Education, Qualifications and Certifications
- High School Graduate with further education in Social Sciences or equivalent experience
- Certification in CPR/First Aid
- Certification in Crisis Intervention
- Police check clearance
Experience and Skills
- Basic computer and clerical skills
- Fluent in written and spoken English
- Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and fairness
- Prior related experience in frontline social service settings
- Knowledge of homelessness, addictions counselling and mental health
Skills and Capabilities
- Attention to detail; problem solving and analytical skills
- Team player with the ability to collaborate
- Adherence to The Salvation Army and Evangeline Residence values
- Valid driver’s license is an asset
Compensation
The target hiring range for this position is not specified. Placement will be based on market conditions, internal equity, candidate experience, skills and qualifications.
