Job description

All staff positions at the Women's Centre are employed by the Mokami Status of Women Council (MSWC). Our work is guided by feminist theory and principles.

Position Scope:
The Relief Housing Support Worker is a casual/on-call position reporting directly to the MSWC's Supportive Living Program Coordinator and Executive Director. This role is part of a supportive team that helps carry out MSWC's housing program, offering care and connection within a trauma-informed, harm reduction framework. Relief staff contribute to a circle of care that centres empathy, dignity, and safety for women and gender-diverse people who call MSWC home. Support Workers help create a welcoming, inclusive, and safe environment. They use compassionate communication, de-escalation, and mediation skills to prevent and respond to crises, always working from a place of respect and understanding.

Major Responsibilities & Typical Duties:
•Build supportive, trusting relationships with residents and community members
•Offer emotional and practical support, especially during times of stress or crisis
•Respond to situations using de-escalation, mediation, and trauma-informed approaches
•Monitor and operate the security system to help maintain a safe environment
•Answer phones and door entries in a welcoming, professional manner
•Distribute harm reduction supplies and personal care items with care, respect, and without judgment
•Support individuals in navigating MSWC programs and community resources
•Maintain accurate and confidential documentation using non-stigmatizing language
•Collaborate with interdisciplinary professionals (e.g., social workers, healthcare providers, outreach teams) to support residents' well-being
•Conduct regular apartment checks to ensure health, safety, and program compliance
•Assist with the planning and facilitation of programs and events for residents
•Help with program logistics, including preparing food, setting up rooms, and cleaning up afterward
•Attend staff meetings and contribute to team communication and planning
•Assist with cleaning and the upkeep of common spaces
•Clear snow and ensure safe entryways during winter
•Participate in other tasks as needed to support the MSWC community

Consideration will be given to applicants with a combination of the following skills and experiences:
•Education or training in social sciences, social work, psychology, or related fields
•Experience supporting individuals in community-based, non-profit, or housing environments
•A commitment to MSWC's values and understanding of our programs
•A cooperative, kind, and respectful approach to teamwork
•Ability to work independently while staying connected to a collaborative team
•Understanding and application of Harm Reduction, Trauma-Informed, Feminist, Anti-Racist, and Anti-Oppressive practices
•Knowledge of gender-based violence, systemic barriers, and community issues faced by women and gender-diverse people
•Cultural humility and awareness of Indigenous cultures and the ongoing impacts of intergenerational trauma
•Commitment to equity and experience working in spaces that centre the voices and needs of those impacted by gender-based violence, criminalization, colonialism, and other systemic barriers.
•Strong communication skills—both written and verbal
•Comfortable with basic computer tasks
•Awareness of confidentiality, boundaries, and ethical support work
•A calm, thoughtful, and solution-focused mindset

Hours of Work:
Relief Housing Support Workers are there to support their full-time team members when they need time for leave, when they need a personal wellness day, or when those unexpected life events happen. These shifts are often with little notice, but can also be planned months in advance. We are in need of relief workers who are regularly available from 4PM — 12AM and from 12AM -8AM from Monday to Friday, but also those that would be available for relief work on weekends from 8AM -8PM and from 8PM to 8AM. This position requires that applicants are available for shifts between 3-12 hours, seven days a week including holidays. There are no guaranteed hours as this is a casual/on-call position.

Compensation:
$22 per hour + 4% vacation pay
