Job summary

Regent Park Community Health Centre is seeking a Relief Registered Early Childhood Educator (RECE) to join the Early Years team. The role is on an as-required basis with flexible hours to meet program needs.

The RECE will deliver high-quality early childhood programming for children birth to six, collaborating with families, staff, and community partners to promote healthy development and inclusive practices. HOOPP pension is included in the hourly rate.

Qualifications

  • Certificate and Membership in good standing in the College of ECEs.
  • Knowledge of ELECT Framework and How Does Learning Happen is an asset.
  • Experience with childcare policies (CCEA) and City of Toronto AQI.
  • Minimum 2 years' childcare experience.
  • Ability to work with diverse families and communities.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement programs supporting physical, cognitive, emotional and social development.
  • Identify and respond to challenges faced by children and parents.
  • Plan engaging activities and adapt programs to individual needs.
  • Observe and discuss child progress with parents and team members.
  • Coordinate activities and supervise other staff on rotating basis.

Job description

We are a dynamic community-based health centre promoting social justice and health equity in the Regent Park neighbourhood and Downtown East area of Toronto. We operate out of several locations and provide a wide variety of services including: primary health care, chiropody, physiotherapy, health promotion, social work, community health, immigrant and refugee services, harm reduction and homeless programs, Pathways to Education, infant and child development programs, parenting programs, youth outreach and employment services. We currently have the following opening on our EarlyON Child and Family Centre team:

Relief Registered Early Childhood Educator (RECE)

Hours of work are on an as required basis according to program needs.

There are no regular or guaranteed hours of relief work.

Hourly Range: $ 27.63 - $ 33.28, including HOOPP pension

Position Summary:

The Registered Early Childhood Educator is part of the Early Years team, delivering service using a model of primary prevention and early intervention. The goal of these programs is to support children and families from pregnancy until child is 6 years old by being responsive, accessible, offer high quality programming that contributes to healthy child development.

The RECE provides opportunities for children birth to six years of age to explore all areas of their development including cognitive, social/emotional, gross and fine motor, and language. The RECE is required to work in ways that are respectful and inclusive of all services users, staff and volunteers and that promote the mission and values of RPCHC.

Responsibilities and Tasks Include:

  • Develop and implement children's programs that support and promote the physical, cognitive, emotional and social development of children
  • Integrate learning opportunities for children based on their unique interests and abilities
Interact directly with adults whose children are in program and act as a positive role model.
  • Provide early learning and care for children during scheduled hours.
  • Identify and respond appropriately to challenges the child and or the parent faces.
  • Plan innovative ways of keeping children actively engaged and impart knowledge to children through fun and play.
  • Adapt the program to suit the needs of the individual child or group.
  • Plan and maintain an environment that protects the health, security and well-being of children.
  • Assess the abilities, interests and needs of children and discuss progress or problems with parents and other team members.
  • Observe children for signs of potential learning or behavioural problems and work with parents, guardians and team to identify resources and make referrals.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with co-workers and community service providers working with children.
  • Plan and organize activities for school-age children in programs when needed.
  • Coordinate activities and provide direction to other early childhood educators and assistants for specific programs as assigned, on rotating basis.
  • Act as an RECE resource to parents and other staff members as required.
  • Refer families to internal and external resources.
  • Promote and participate in evaluation of programs and activities.

Qualifications and Skills required:

  • Certificate and Membership in good standing in the College of ECEs
  • Knowledge of ELECT Framework, How Does Learning Happen and other relevant Ministry documents an asset
  • Knowledge & experience maintaining standards of childcare policies, CCEYA and the City of Toronto's AQI
  • Have great qualities working with children with special abilities
  • Minimum 2 years' experience in a childcare setting required.
  • Experience in working with families/caregivers preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in programming in a flexible manner focusing on children from birth to six years.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within and across teams
  • Understanding of Anti-oppression principles
  • Ability to work effectively with people of various cultural, age and economic backgrounds
  • Knowledge of the Regent Park area and issues affecting families living within the Regent and Moss Park communities
  • Must have the most up to date vaccine for the protection of clients and staff.
