Job summary

The Tlicho Community Services Agency is seeking a Relief Bus Driver to provide safe, reliable transportation for students to and from school and related activities in Behchoko, NT.

The role requires operating a school bus safely, supervising students during transit, complying with Education Act and Motor Vehicles Act, and maintaining records. Regular inspections, responsive communication, and adherence to policies are essential.

Qualifications

  • Northwest Territories Class 2 driver's license with Air and Bus Endorsements required by date of hire.
  • Grade 12 education is required.
  • One year of professional driving experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Safely transport students and passengers according to routes and schedules.
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections and report safety concerns.
  • Operate the school bus safely in varying road and weather conditions.
  • Maintain student behaviour and promote a safe, respectful environment.
  • Keep vehicle, inspection and incident records up to date.
  • Respond to emergencies and follow safety procedures.
  • Perform routine maintenance and minor servicing as needed.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents/guardians, staff and supervisors.
  • Maintain confidentiality and culturally appropriate interactions.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Job Information

The Relief Bus Driver provides safe, reliable and timely transportation for students to and from school and school-related activities.

The position is responsible for the safe operation of a school bus, student supervision during transportation, and compliance with applicable legislation, safety standards, and TCSA policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safely transport students and passengers according to established routes and schedules.
  • Conduct required pre-trip and post-trip inspections and report maintenance or safety concerns.
  • Operate the school bus safely in varying road, traffic and weather conditions.
  • Maintain appropriate student behaviour and promote a safe, respectful environment.
  • Maintain required vehicle, inspection and incident records.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies and follow established safety procedures.
  • Complete routine maintenance and minor servicing, as required.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents/guardians, school staff and supervisors.
  • Maintain confidentiality and demonstrate respectful, culturally appropriate interactions.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Key Qualifications

  • Valid Northwest Territories Class 2 driver's license with Air and Bus Endorsements by the date of hire. Registration in the required course and/or examination may be considered.
  • Grade 12 education.
  • One (1) year of professional driving experience is preferred.

Working Conditions

  • Relief work is provided on an as-and-when-required basis and may include short-notice shift coverage.
  • Regular transportation may involve approximately 60 students and up to 100 km of driving per school day.
  • Some travel to other locations may be required.
  • Work involves driving in varying road and weather conditions.
  • The position requires regular vehicle inspections and may involve routine maintenance tasks requiring bending, crouching, kneeling and lifting.
  • The position requires sustained attention and responsibility for student safety while operating the school bus.
  • Compliance and Safety
  • The incumbent must comply with applicable legislation, including the Education Act and Motor Vehicles Act and Standards, as well as TCSA policies, school procedures and workplace health and safety requirements.
