Position Summary

Rehabilitation Physiotherapy Assistant, Emergency

Your goal in this position is to be responsible for independently carrying out prescribed rehabilitation therapy programs under the direction and supervision of an occupational or physical therapist. You will perform administrative duties and clean equipment as required. You demonstrate excellent communication skills, and are able to communicate with patients and co-workers professionally. You work effectively with supervising therapists, lead group sessions, and motivate patients to participate. You thrive in a physically demanding, fast-paced, and challenging environment. You adapt to changing workloads and possess great organizational skills. As a critical thinker, you prioritize and work collaboratively within an inter-professional team. This role supports the hospital’s academic mandate by advancing care through teaching, learning, research, and innovation. You also contribute to ensuring health and safety policies are followed to maintain a healthy environment for staff, physicians, volunteers, learners, patients, and families.

Responsibilities
  1. Carry out exercise programs with patients individually or in groups and assist with gait training as prescribed by the physiotherapist.
  2. Perform patient transfers safely, demonstrating proper lifting techniques and body mechanics to nursing staff and families as instructed by the therapist.
  3. Assist patients with ADL training to facilitate independence as prescribed by the occupational therapist.
  4. Help set up strength training equipment for patients.
  5. Record relevant statistics.
  6. Maintain equipment inventory.
Qualifications
  • Diploma from an accredited community college in Occupational Therapy Assistant or Physiotherapy Assistant (OTA/PTA) program.
  • Experience in an acute inpatient medical setting and/or with geriatric rehabilitation patients.
  • Ability to work effectively with supervising therapists.
  • Experience leading group sessions and motivating patients.
  • Experience working in a physically demanding, fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to apply physiotherapeutic modalities.
  • Bilingual in French and English is an asset.
