Job summary

St. Joseph’s Health System (SJHS) is seeking a part-time Physiotherapy Assistant/Occupational Therapy Assistant to support the Physiotherapy Services team at Charlton Campus and Satellite Health Facility in Hamilton.

The role requires completion of a 2-year PTA/OTA diploma, CPR certification, and demonstrated experience in hospital/clinic environments. You will work within an interprofessional team to promote mobility, independence, and patient well-being.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Physiotherapy Assistant/Occupational Therapist Assistant 2-year diploma program.
  • PTA/OTA certification recognized by the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario (CPO) and the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario (COTO) required.
  • Demonstrated interest and proficiency in PTA/OTA roles with defined populations.
  • Ability to function within an interprofessional team with multiple therapists/units.
  • Excellent interpersonal, problem-solving and critical thinking skills; work to full scope of the assistant role.
  • Minimum of three to six months of clinical experience; two years in hospital/clinic preferred.
  • Ability to communicate with elderly/frail population; CPR certificate; familiarity with MS Word and registration systems.
  • Physical ability to use therapy equipment; team player; capable of lifting and transferring patients.
  • Good attendance; updated resume; knowledge of seniors care; Gentle Persuasive Approach training preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist registered therapist with transfer and mobility training per therapists' recommendations.
  • Follow ADL retraining with Occupational Therapist to maximize independence.
  • Assist in data collection for assessment/reassessment.
  • Administer modalities and programs as instructed, including ice/heat, hydrotherapy, TENS, and pulmonary hygiene.
  • Follow pulmonary hygiene programs and reinforce education on energy conservation and device use.
  • Monitor patient response, document effects, and inform therapist of changes.
  • Complete workload statistics and maintain equipment/inventory.
  • Attend staff meetings and provide clerical support as needed by Manager.

Job Description

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to function within an interprofessional team managing competing demands from multiple assigning therapists and units required
  • Excellent interpersonal, problem-solving and critical thinking skills and demonstrated ability to work to full scope of the assistant role in both OTA and PTA capacit required
  • Minimum of three and up tosix months of clinical experience required
  • Two years experience in a hospital or clinic environment working with clients with orthopaedic, rheumatic, neurological, respiratory and geriatric conditions preferred
  • Ability to communicate with an elderly and/or frail population
  • CPR certificate
  • Familiarity with various computer applications i.e. MS Word, internet, patient registration systems
  • Physical ability for the regular use of therapy equipment i.e. wheelchairs, bariatric chairs, mechanical lifts, weights
  • Ability to function effectively within a team and manage competing demands
  • Must be capable of performing all related duties i.e. lifting, transferring patients, walking with and portering patients
  • Good work performance and a good attendance record are essential
  • An updated resumemust accompany the application
  • Demonstrated knowledge, sensitivity and expertise in the care of seniors and their families
  • Gentle Persuasive Approach training preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assists the registered therapist with transfer and mobility training and subsequent promotion of independence in mobility and transfers by following through with the recommendations of the therapists
  • Follows through with ADL retraining at the recommendations of theOccupationalTherapist to maximize client independence
  • Assists the therapist in the collection of data for use in the assessment and reassessment process
  • Administers specific modalities and treatment programs at the instruction of the Physiotherapist, including ice/heat, hydrotherapy, TENS, intermittent compression and pulmonary hygiene programs
  • Follows pulmonary hygiene programs developed by the Physiotherapist
  • Reinforces education programs under the direction of the therapists regarding energy conservation, use of assistive devices, joint protection, posture, etc.
  • Monitors/observes the client’s response to treatment, documenting effects and informing the therapist of any positive or adverse effects
  • Completes workload statistics
  • Provides general housekeeping tasks such as keeping therapy equipment and space clean and maintaining inventory
  • Attends staff meetings
  • Provides clerical assistance when requested, and other related duties as assigned by the Manager
