Job summary

The City of Oshawa is seeking a skilled diesel and heavy‑duty equipment technician to maintain and repair the city fleet. You will perform maintenance, inspections and diagnose defects across off‑road and heavy‑duty equipment, including field repairs outside the garage.

Requires two years of relevant experience, valid DZ license with clean abstract, and certifications such as 310T and 310S. You must read and follow technical instructions, maintain accurate records in a computerized system, and

Qualifications

  • Minimum two years of experience repairing off-road and heavy-duty equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair electrical circuits, hydraulic and computer systems.
  • Valid Ontario DZ driver's license with clean abstract.
  • Strong reading, writing and record-keeping skills in a computerized environment.
  • Good communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Shift work and Winter Call Board availability.

Responsibilities

Job Description

Reporting to the Supervisor, Fleet Services or designate, be responsible for the maintenance and repair of City equipment.

Responsibilities
  • Performing maintenance service and inspection on equipment
  • Diagnosing and repairing defects
  • Repairing equipment or other City property outside of the garage area
  • Modifying and remedying defects that develop in equipment
  • Operating gas and electrical welding equipment
  • Operating City equipment
  • Responsible for full garage operation during night shift
  • Performing various duties related to Winter Control/Call Board activities
Requirements:
  • Must possess valid Truck and Coach Technician Certification (310T) and possess or be able to obtain Automotive Service Technician Certification (310S)
  • Possess or be able to obtain Automotive Propane Certificate ICE-P and Ozone Depletion Prevention (ODP)
  • Automotive Natural Gas Certificate ICE-NG and Heavy-duty Equipment Certificate (421A) would be considered an asset
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in repairing off-road as well as heavy-duty equipment. Demonstrated ability to make inspections of automotive equipment for service and to diagnose and repair electrical circuits, solenoid controls, hydraulic systems and automotive computer systems as applied to City and off-road equipment
  • Demonstrated skill in the use of tools and in the operation of machines and equipment commonly used in the automotive mechanics’ trade
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Ontario Driver's Licence, in good standing (minimum Class DZ), a driver’s abstract showing no demerit points, and the ability to pass the Corporation's tests for motor vehicle operation
  • Good communication skills and ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Able to read, understand and follow general and technical instructions
  • Able to complete forms and maintain accurate records relevant to the job, in a computerized environment
  • Good interpersonal skills, respectful, tact and courtesy in discussing information with operators, colleagues and supervisors
  • Established skills and experience using Microsoft Office applications and related software
  • The job requires shift work necessary to fulfil the requirements of the operation
  • Must be able to serve on the Winter Call Board
  • Knowledge and understanding of, and ability to apply, relevant safety policies, standards and legislation (Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS, etc.)

As a condition of employment, the City of Oshawa will require successful candidates to undergo a Criminal Records and Judicial Matters check and an employment medical.
