Job summary

City of Hamilton is seeking a Fleet Technician to diagnose, repair and maintain city vehicles and equipment. Reporting to the Supervisor Mechanical Repair, you will perform scheduled maintenance, conduct inspections and use OEM diagnostic software to troubleshoot complex systems.

The role requires a valid Ontario 310T Licence, strong diagnostic skills, and the ability to work outdoors in all weather, including evenings and weekends.

Qualifications

  • Must hold valid Ontario Truck and Coach Technician’s Licence (310T).
  • Experience diagnosing, troubleshooting and repairing city fleet diesel engines.
  • Proficient with OEM diagnostic software (Cummins Insite, Detroit Diesel, etc.).
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and in outdoor conditions.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES

Reporting to the Supervisor Mechanical Repair, repairs, maintains and inspects various types of City Vehicles and Equipment.

GENERAL DUTIES

Diagnose, troubleshoot and repair City vehicles and equipment.

Inspect and service vehicles and equipment on a scheduled basis, this includes Periodic mandatory commercial vehicle inspections and regular preventative maintenance inspections.

Ability to diagnose, troubleshoot and repair the City’s vehicles and equipment using OEM software that would include but not limited to Cummins Insite, Detroit Diesel Diagnostic Link, Allison DOC, Meritor WABCO Toolbox, Bendix ACOM and Ford IDS.

Perform regular preventative maintenance inspections engine fuel management systems, engine electrical systems, frames, steering and suspension systems, transmission and auxiliary power systems, braking systems, compressed air supply systems and hydraulic systems.

Operate shop and power tools such as: hydraulic jacks, hoists, cranes, computerized diagnostic equipment, oxy-acetylene torches, variety of hand tools (air and electric) and industrial tools (drill press, saws, presses), to name a few.

Inspect vehicles and equipment that have been turned in at the end of their cycle, record deficiencies and recommend repair or replacement.

Dismantle, adjust, repair and reassemble engines, transmissions, clutches, rear ends, differentials, drive-shafts, axles, and related parts.

Diagnose, troubleshoot and repair:

  • Starting, electrical and charging systems.
  • Steering suspension and Air/Hydraulic brake assemblies.
  • Fuel, exhaust and cooling systems.
  • Pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
  • Air and Hydraulic brake systems.
  • Turf and lawn and garden equipment (i.e. out-front rotary mowers and tractors, side by sides).

Weld with gas and electric welding equipment.

Diagnose troubleshoot and repair problems with vehicles and equipment at onsite locations, in adverse weather conditions.

Attach and detach accessory pieces of equipment such as snowplows and agricultural type equipment.

Complete computerized work orders, time cards and submit parts requisitions through our Fleet Management System.

Work in accordance with the provisions of applicable Health and Safety legislation and all City of Hamilton corporate and departmental policies and procedures related to Occupational Health and Safety.

Perform other duties as assigned which are directly related to the major responsibilities of the job.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must have and maintain a valid Ontario Truck and Coach Technician’s Licence (310T).
    • Having a valid 310S certification would be an asset.
    • Having 435A Small Engine Technician certification and experience would be an asset.
  • Experience with diagnosing, troubleshooting and repairing Cummins, Detroit Diesel and Ford diesel exhaust after treatment systems.
  • An in-depth knowledge of Cummins Insite, Detroit Diesel Diagnostic Link, Allison DOC, Meritor WABCO Toolbox, Bendix ACOM and Ford IDS software packages.
  • Previous experience in maintaining and repairing trucks in a fleet environment.
  • Capable, knowledgeable and current in all aspects (safe practices measuring, welding, shop tools/equipment, major components, etc.) of Trade Qualification.
  • Working knowledge in the use of Microsoft Office Products such as Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Must be capable of and willing to retain technical competency on City vehicles and equipment.
  • Must be able to work with a minimum of supervision.
  • Must be physically capable of using heavy tools and equipment, working outdoors in adverse weather conditions and working evening, night and weekend shifts.
  • Must supply and maintain the required set of personal hand tools required for the job.
  • Natural gas/propane certification ICEP and ICENG, refrigeration/air conditioning ozone depletion certificate would be an asset.
THIS POSITION REQUIRES A VALID CLASS “G” DRIVER’S LICENCE AND PROOF THEREOF IS REQUIRED AFTER HIRE. CLASS “DZ” LICENCE PREFERRED.
