Duties:
- Work actively and collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary team to organize and deliver care to geriatric clients in a psychiatric setting.
- Maximize the client's function, participation, and control in their recovery.
- Promote healthy lifestyle changes through health teaching.
- Provide person-centered care by incorporating knowledge of the unique needs of older adults with mental health challenges and/or varying stages of cognitive deficits.
- Identify patient needs and respond to them appropriately and promptly.
- Monitor and document patient responses to therapeutic interventions and report unexpected outcomes to the RN.
- Collaborate with the Registered Nurse to effectively manage rapidly changing situations.
- Demonstrate awareness of and comply with the vision and value statements of the Royal, relevant policies, procedures, responsibilities, and routines.
- Promote supportive working relationships and effective communication within the interdisciplinary team.
- Establish and foster effective therapeutic relationships between staff, patients, and their families.
- Meet College of Nurses of Ontario Standards for RPNs.
- Engage in ongoing learning, education, and reflective practice to enhance knowledge.
- Administer medications and perform treatments within the RPN's full scope of practice, adhering to applicable regulations, standards, policies, and procedures.
- Commit to ongoing professional development.
- Work in a manner that ensures staff and patient safety, complying with policies and procedures of The Royal.
- Maintain a work environment aligned with The Royal’s Anti-Racism, Harassment, & Discrimination-Free Workplace Policy.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Graduate of a recognized Diploma Program in Practical Nursing.
- Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Minimum of two years recent experience with older adults with psychiatric/mental health illness is preferred.
- Knowledge of CNO Standards regarding RPN scope of practice.
- Understanding of MHA and relevant legislation.
- WHMIS update within the past 12 months.
- Fire Training update within the past 12 months.
- CPR Certification within the last 12 months.
- Completion of Prevention of Violence in the Workplace training (C.P.I.) is required.
- GPA (Gentle Persuasive Approach) training and P.I.E.C.E.S training, or other related dementia care training, are preferred.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development.
- Basic computer skills.
- Current knowledge of mechanical lifts, transferring, and positioning techniques.
- Proficiency in English (A-) in oral expression, comprehension, reading, and writing; French (A-) in oral expression and comprehension is mandatory.
