Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital is seeking a Registered Practical Nurse for Regular Full-Time 1.0 FTE. The role may rotate across Brain Injury Rehabilitation Team, SODR, and CCC units, requiring availability for various shifts including days, evenings, overnights, weekends and holidays.

The incumbent provides holistic, family-centered care to infants, children and adolescents with disabilities, in a 24-hour inpatient setting, aligned with Ontario nursing standards and RHPA.

Qualifications

THE POSITION

Holland Bloorview is an academic hospital, fully affiliated with the University of Toronto. All clinical staff are expected to contribute to the academic agenda through one or more of the following activities: supervising students, teaching, academic service, scholarship and research. All non-clinical staff are encouraged, when appropriate.

This role may rotate across all 3 Units: Brain Injury Rehabilitation Team (BIRT), Specialized Orthopedic & Developmental Rehabilitation (SODR) and Complex continuing Care (CCC). Successful candidates will be required to work across the 3 units to meet client care needs as required. The Inpatient Rehab & Complex Continuing Care department operates on a 24-hour basis. As such, there is a requirement for availability to work a variety of shifts including daytime, evening, overnight, weekend, and holidays.

The Registered Practical Nurse provides holistic, family-centred care to infants, children, and adolescents and their families who are receiving habilitation, rehabilitation and complex continuing care services, incorporating standards of practice as stated by the College of Nurses of Ontario and the Regulated Health Professions Act.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Practice

  • Uses theoretical and evidence based practice to plan, implement and evaluate nursing care for clients on all 3 inpatient units
  • Provides strength based nursing care that promotes and supports the physical, psychosocial, and spiritual well-being of clients and families
  • Practices culturally competent care
  • Works in partnership with client/family and interprofessional team to facilitate appropriate, timely and effective discharge/transition planning
  • Advocates for clients/families with goal of effective outcomes and appropriate use of resources
  • Interacts with members of the interdisciplinary care team and community providers as appropriate, to ensure an integrated approach to care
  • Supports and respects the client/family’s rights to make decisions based on their own values, beliefs and experiences

Collaboration

  • Collaborates with client / family and interprofessional team to identify client-centred goals
  • Demonstrates excellent communication skills
  • Practices based on identified standards of care within an interprofessional environment

Leadership

  • Uses strength based leadership to develop themselves and engage others, build partnerships and networks to achieve results, and use systems/critical thinking to champion and orchestrate change.
  • Participates in quality improvement activities to ensure the delivery of efficient and effective health care
  • Participates in quality activities to ensure the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment
  • Utilizes the teaching/learning process to provide education, both formal and informal to clients/families, colleagues, students and other professionals within a fully affiliated academic healthcare environment
  • Manages change in a constructive and appropriate manner
  • Seeks opportunities for professional growth

Research/Education

  • Demonstrates a spirit of inquiry by examining current practice and identifying questions for study
  • Utilizes nursing best practice guidelines to deliver care
  • Participates in nursing research where applicable and utilizes outcome measurement

Qualifications

  • Registered Practical Nurse Diploma
  • Current BCLS certificate—Basic Rescuer
  • Previous job-related experience, preferably in a pediatric or rehabilitation setting
  • Demonstrated clinical skills in caring for children with complex orthopedic and/or respiratory needs
  • Experience in behaviour management preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a diverse workload while setting priorities and meeting deadlines
  • Demonstrated computer skills, Meditech experience preferred
