Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) possess a defined body of knowledge, clinical skills, procedural skills, and professional attitudes, which are directed towards effective patient and family-centered care. RPNs apply these competencies to collect and interpret information, make appropriate nursing clinical decisions, and carry out therapeutic nursing interventions. In collaboration with the Registered Nurse, RPNs operate within the boundaries of their knowledge, skills, and judgment, considering personal expertise, the healthcare setting, and the patient's preferences. The role is guided by a code of ethics and a commitment to clinical competence, characterized by up-to-date, resource-efficient clinical practice, and effective communication in partnership with patients and families. Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, RPNs scrub for major and minor surgical procedures and assist with patient care according to the Standards of Nursing Practice of the College of Nurses of Ontario and the standards of nursing care of this hospital.
