University Health Network (UHN) in Toronto General Hospital is seeking a part-time, 0.5 FTE Registered Practical Nurse for the Inpatient Cardiology Unit (5B PMB). You will provide compassionate, evidence-informed nursing care to adult cardiology patients across complex diagnostic levels, with a focus on telemetry, perioperative and post-procedural care.

Inclusive teamwork and flexible scheduling are essential.

Qualifications

Current registration as an RPN with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
BCLS certification required.
Minimum one year cardiac experience preferred.
Coronary Care 1 Nursing Certificate is an asset.
Experience with cardiac monitoring including telemetry, pacemaker management and arrhythmia interpretation is an asset.
Knowledge of high-alert medications used in cardiology.
Cardiovascular assessment skills with recognition of deterioration.
Excellent interpersonal and professional communication with patients and families.
Flexible and able to work across multiple patient care teams.
Strong organizational, time-management and prioritization skills.
Conflict resolution and de-escalation skills; EPIC Hyperspace experience.
Commitment to patient safety, quality improvement and evidence-informed practice.
Infection prevention and control practices.

Wage Range: $3733 - $3816 per hour (start rate is non-negotiable and in accordance with collective agreement requirements)
Hours: 0.5 FTE (Minimum 2-3 shifts per week – with options to pick up more based on unit needs)
Shifts: 12 Hour Shifts (Must be available to work Days/Nights/Weekends/Stat Holidays)
Status: Permanent Part-Time

Job Summary

This 28-bed Inpatient Cardiology Unit serves adult cardiology patients who require primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary levels of assessment, diagnosis and intervention of their cardiac condition. The unit is structured to encompass five services for our cardiology population including general cardiology, electrophysiology, adult congenital populations, heart failure and consults. Staff Nurses develop skills in arrhythmia interpretation and telemetry monitoring.

The Majority Of Patients Have Diagnoses Of

Acute coronary syndrome
Cardiomyopathy
Heart failure
Patients with Dysrhythmias
Congenital heart defects
Stable Pre- and Post-cardiac catheterization patients

Duties

Applying knowledge of nursing science, theory, skill and critical decision making in the provision of compassionate, collaborative and competent care in accordance with the UHN Professional Practice Model for Nursing and the mission and vision of nursing at the UHN
Ensuring practice is consistent with professional standards and the ethical framework as outlined by the College of Nurses of Ontario and the UHN policy and procedure.

Qualifications

Current Registration as a Registered Practical Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario
Basic Cardiac Life Support (B.C.L.S.) certification
Minimum one (1) year Cardiac experience preferred
Coronary Care 1 Nursing Certificate will be considered an asset
Experience with cardiac monitoring including telemetry, pacemaker management and arrhythmias identification and interpretation will be considered an asset.
Demonstrated knowledge of high-alert medication commonly used in cardiology
Demonstrated comprehensive cardiovascular assessment skills, including recognition of deterioration and initiation of appropriate interventions
Excellent interpersonal and professional communication skills with the team, colleagues, patients and families
Must be flexible and possess the ability to work effectively and efficiently within a variety of patient care teams
Excellent organizational, time management, and prioritization skills
Excellent conflict resolution and de-escalation skills
Experience with EPIC Hyperspace System
Demonstrated commitment to patient safety, quality improvement, and evidence-informed practice
Knowledge of infection prevention and control practices
Demonstrated ability to provide patient and family education related to cardiac conditions, medication, lifestyle modifications, and discharge planning
