Job summary

Sinai Health's Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto is seeking an experienced Registered Practical Nurse for General Internal Medicine. You will provide holistic patient and family-centered care, document assessments, and support multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced unit.

The 12 South General Medicine Unit is a 28-bed unit offering diverse cases, including pneumonia and chronic illnesses, with opportunities to learn about respiratory medicine, oncology, palliative care, geriatrics, and pain

Qualifications

  • Currently registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) in good standing.
  • Graduate of a CNO-approved Practical Nursing program.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.
  • Preferred: 2 years of acute care experience.

Responsibilities

  • Apply the nursing process in holistic patient and family-centered care.
  • Provide comprehensive documentation of assessments and care.
  • Anticipate and respond to rapidly changing patient conditions.
  • Educate patients and families using effective teaching strategies.
  • Administer medications and provide care per CNO standards and Sinai Health policies.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team (doctors, pharmacists, social workers, nurses).
  • Utilize a broad range of nursing skills and procedures including complex wound care and IVs.
  • Mentor learners, peers and other health professionals.

About the 12 South General Medicine Unit

We are a 28-bed general medicine unit dedicated to providing comprehensive care for patients with a wide range of acute and chronic medical conditions. Our patients range from individuals diagnosed with simple pneumonia to those with complex acute and chronic illnesses. This diverse patient population offers opportunities to acquire specialized knowledge in respiratory medicine, oncology and palliative care, pain management, geriatrics, and wound and skin care. Affiliated with various academic institutions, including the University of Toronto, our unit is committed to continuous learning and professional development, making it an ideal environment for nurses to grow and excel.

In this role you will:
  • Apply the nursing process in the provision of holistic patient and family-centered care
  • Provide comprehensive and accurate documentation of assessments, care provision, and evaluations
  • Anticipate, recognize, and address rapidly changing situations.
  • Provide health education to patients and their families using effective teaching strategies
  • Provide direct patient care in accordance to the CNO standards and Sinai Health's policy and procedures
  • Administer medications and provide any necessary care (including, but not limited to wound care, IVs, monitoring drains, prepare patients for procedures, etc.)
  • Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team, including doctors, pharmacists, social workers, clinical nurse specialists, etc.
  • Apply a broad range of nursing skills and procedures including (but not exclusive to) CADD pumps, chest tubes, nephrostomy tubes, complex wounds, central lines, enteral feeding tubes, TPN, CIWA monitoring, managing a Code Blues, and chemotherapy
  • Participate in the mentoring of learners, peers and other regulated and unregulated health professionals
  • Advocate and contribute to safe discharge and transition planning
  • Perform other duties consistent with the job classification as required
Job Requirements:
Mandatory
  • Currently registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
  • Graduate of a CNO-approved Practical Nursing (PN) program. Equivalent combined education and experience will be considered
  • Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS)
Preferred
  • 2 years of experience in an acute care clinical environment

  • Previous experience or involvement in process improvement initiatives
