Job summary

Scarborough Health Network (SHN) is hiring a Registered Practical Nurse for the Women’s and Children Program to care for postpartum women and newborns within a team-focused environment.

The RPN will provide high-quality nursing care, engage in ethical practice, and participate in a busy, multidisciplinary team with shift work, weekends and holidays. SHN supports ongoing education and professional development.

Qualifications

• RPN diploma and current registration in good standing with the CNO as an RPN.
• Experience or recent training (within last 3 years) in postpartum care.
• NRP certification and breastfeeding course required (or plan to complete within 3 months).
• Willingness to train in alternate clinical areas within the Women’s and Children Program.
• BCLS certificate and ongoing continuing education are required.

Responsibilities

• Provide quality nursing care to postpartum women and their newborns.
• Work within a total patient care delivery model following standards of practice.
• Engage in ethical conduct and collaborate with the multidisciplinary team.
• Be available for shift work, weekends and holidays.
• Maintain accurate documentation and patient education as part of care.

Position Overview

Reporting to the Patient Care Manager, the Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) is a professional caregiver who is responsible and accountable for providing quality patient care within a total patient care delivery model in accordance with the standards of practice and competencies of the College of Nurses of Ontario, the Regulated Health Professionals Act and Scarborough Health Network. As a Registered Practical Nurse in the Women’s and Children Program, you will be part of a health care team that promotes the birthing experience as a normal, health process and the family as an integral part of that experience. At this time, the RPN will provide comprehensive care to Post-partum women and their newborns. In this role, you will engage in ethical conduct and provide high quality nursing care to patients and their families, based on the philosophy and conceptual framework of Nursing Practice at Scarborough Health Network. Please note that this position is required to work shift work, weekends and holidays.

Requirements

• RPN diploma
• Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse
• Current experience or consolidation training (within last 3 years) in Postpartum
• Current Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP) and a breastfeeding course is required (or a commitment to complete within 3 months of employment)
• Candidates must be interested and willing to be trained to work in alternate clinical areas within the Women’s and Children Program
• Current BCLS certificate
• Evidence of continuing education and professional development is required
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills both written and verbal.
• Demonstrates excellent problem-solving, decision making and critical thinking skills
• Demonstrates excellent organizational and time-management skills
• Demonstrates initiative and the ability to function both independently and as a multidisciplinary team member in a fast paced demanding environment
• Demonstrates values consistent with Scarborough Health Network (SHN) Code of Conduct and is committed to fostering a healthy and positive work environment in accordance with Health & Safety policy and legislation
• Utilize protective equipment provided and identify and reports hazards
