Job Purpose

To provide direct professional nursing care to patients requiring mental health services and presenting with less complex care needs. Utilizing the principles of the nursing process and in collaboration with the RN and members of the clinical team, the RPN can provide care to patients with more complex needs within his/her level of competence. The RPN, as a member of the clinical team, contributes to the patient’s journey toward maximum independence and wellness.

Skills and Qualifications
  • Current, unrestricted registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse
  • Recent experience in an acute psychiatric setting
  • Current CPR certification
Responsibilities
  • Completing nursing histories based on information received from patients, families, and other sources
  • Developing and recording goal-oriented nursing care plans focused on immediate needs in collaboration with patients
  • Performing interventions within the scope of practice and managing outcomes with available resources
  • Accurately following prescribed medical regimes
  • Re-assessing the care plan based on evaluation and professional judgment
  • Recognizing unusual patient responses and consulting with team members as needed
