Registered Practical Nurse (Family Birthing Centre)

Overview

The Registered Practical Nurse will perform at their full scope of practice, including planning, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating patient care for patients with well-defined and predictable outcomes.

Education

• Registered Practical Nursing Diploma with current registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario.
• Current BLS certification.
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification.
• Completion of an RPN Assessment course.
• College course on Support and Education of the Breastfeeding Client; current knowledge and skills in breastfeeding initiation and maintenance.
• Postpartum/newborn assessment course from a recognized community college within one year of hire.
• Proficient computer skills.

Qualifications

• 1-2 years recent experience in postpartum mother and baby care.
• Understanding of the learning needs of this population.
• Effective teaching strategies for patient education.
• Clear articulation of patient-focused and family-centered care philosophies.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Commitment to continuing education.
• Post PRN certification in maternity and newborn care (preferred).
• Ability to work efficiently with team members.
• Knowledge of the well mother/baby dyad.
• Good work and attendance record.
• Adherence to Occupational Health and Safety Act of Ontario.
• Contribute to a culture of safety and adhere to safety policies.
• Protect the psychological health and safety of staff and patients.
