Job Description

Candidates are invited to apply for casual Registered Practical Nurse positions at our Extendicare Medex facility, a 193-bed long-term care home in Ottawa, Ontario.

Reporting to the Director of Care, the RPN will enhance the management and quality of nursing practice in accordance with the Standards of the College of Nurses of Ontario, Long Term Care Standards, and Extendicare Standards.

Responsibilities

• Provide resident care according to established nursing standards, physicians’ orders, and policies; observe, report, and record vital signs, symptoms, and conditions; and initiate remedial health measures when appropriate. Ensure proper nursing techniques are followed.
• Assess residents, develop, implement, review, and evaluate care plans; monitor health status; note changes; and refer to doctors as needed; process and implement physician orders.
• Organize and oversee care activities, including restorative and palliative care; interpret and implement policies, procedures, and regulations.
• Supervise and evaluate nursing and personal care staff; orient and train new personnel; participate in in-service education; monitor performance; conduct appraisals; and escalate issues to the Director of Care.

Qualifications

• Current certificate of competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario.
• Registration or eligibility for registration with the Registered Practical Nurses Association of Ontario.
• Knowledge of nursing practices and infection control.
• Strong human relation skills and commitment to working with seniors.
• Effective communication skills; ability to work independently and in teams.
