Job summary

Humber River Health is seeking a Registered Orthopaedic Technologist to join the Fracture Clinic. This permanent part-time role involves hands-on casting, wound care, and assisting in plastics and surgical procedures within a hospital setting.

Successful candidate will hold CSOT registration, complete an approved Orthopaedic Technologist program or health-related degree, and maintain BCLS. Three years of related experience and a commitment to safety and education are essential.

Qualifications

  • Current CSOT registration in good standing.
  • Graduate of CSOT-approved Orthopaedic Technologist program or health-related bachelor's.
  • Current BCLS certification.
  • Minimum 3 years recent orthopaedic technologist experience.
  • Experience in fracture/plastics clinics preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform splint/cast applications and related adjustments.
  • Assist physicians in inpatient and plastics clinic procedures.
  • Assess and update orthopaedic care plans with care team.
  • Process diagnostic orders and document care in records.
  • Educate patients on cast care and discharge instructions.
  • Maintain inventory of orthopaedic supplies and ensure safety.
  • Coach/mentor Orthopaedic Technicians and students.
  • Maintain CSOT registration and attend in-services.

Location: Humber River Health, Wilson SiteLabour Group:NOWUReporting Relationship: Manager, Fracture, Plastics & Surgical Clinics, Vascular Access TeamHourly Rate: $35.349 - $44.954

Position Responsibilities:

  • Performing interventions focused on the following areas: splint/cast and dressings/bandages application; windowing/wedging casts; trimming, bi-valving casts, bandages and splints; removal/repair/re-enforce casts; removal of sutures/wires/pins/external fixators; application of principles of surgical asepsis; preparing for minor surgical procedures application; setting up surgical field for injections and minor procedures; and adjusting and removing orthopaedic devices.
  • Assisting physicians on inpatient units and the plastics clinic with orthopaedic procedures, including wound care, aspirations, minor surgical procedures and fracture reductions.Performing/Participating in a comprehensive assessment of patients’ conditions, and develop an orthopaedic care plan in collaboration with the family and the interdisciplinary health care team.
  • Assessing/Re-evaluating/Revising the orthopaedic plan based on patient condition.
  • Processing physician orders for diagnostics, results, etc.
  • Documenting care provided in the patient record.
  • Providing education related to orthopaedic treatments and discharge instructions/follow-up care to patients and families (e.g. cast care, brace and appliance application, wound care, osteoporosis, injections, crutch use, etc).
  • Maintaining inventory of orthopaedic supplies and devices (adjusting quotas, requesting appropriate staff to order- supplies, etc), ensuring equipment and supplies are adequate, in safe working order, and are reported as needed for repair and replacement. Ensuring supplies are used economically.
  • Keeping work area, equipment and supplies hazard free and reporting any health and safety concerns appropriately and in timely manner.
  • Ensuring self and others adhere to safety policies and practices related to medical devices, equipment and bio hazardous materials.
  • Following hospital guidelines and standards for documentation including incident reporting
  • Performing work assignments under the direction of an orthopaedic surgeon, working within scope of practice, and following hospital policies.
  • Training/Coaching of Orthopaedic Technicians and students.
  • Maintaining CSOT registration and competence by attending in-services, workshops, conferences, physicians’ rounds etc.

Qualifications:

  • Current registration with the Canadian Society of Orthopaedic Technologists (CSOT) as a Registered Member in good standing
  • Graduate of a recognized Orthopaedic Technologist Programme sanctioned by the CSOT, apprenticeship programme, and sponsorship by an Orthopaedic Physician or Graduate from a Bachelor's Degree in Health and/or related field
  • Current BCLS
  • Minimum 3 years of recent experience as Orthopaedic Technologist including but not limited to –

  • Knowledge/Understanding:
    • anatomical structures and relationships with one another;
    • description of orthopaedic conditions /injuries;
    • casting including related orthopaedic technologies; theory and application of skin, skeletal and manual traction;
    • application of aseptic technique in dressing change, removal of sutures, staples, pins and external fixators, and
    • setting up surgical field for injections and minor procedures.
  • Demonstrated abilities:
    • interpret simple fractures and dislocations on x-ray film;
    • excellent customer service;
    • effective and efficient time management and organization skills;
    • effective interpersonal and communication skills; and
    • work independently and within a team environment.
  • Energetic, highly motivated, detail oriented individual with strong work ethic with abilities for quick cast or appliance application.
  • Demonstrated commitment to life-long learning and evidence-based practice.
  • Plastics Clinic, Fracture Clinic and/or hospital experience preferred.
  • Nursing/Medical background an asset.
  • Excellent attendance and discipline free record required
