Duties:
- As a member of an interdisciplinary team, you will work actively and collaboratively in organizing and delivering care to geriatric clients in a psychiatric setting.
- Maximize the person’s function, participation and control in their recovery.
- Have a keen awareness of the needs of clients, families, and service providers who will participate jointly in the planning and delivery of person centered care.Demonstrated ability to focus on continuity of care through clear communication.
- Take in charge duties and responsibilities for the nursing care and coordination of care planning, on a forty-three (43) bed Geriatric Psychiatric Unit.
- Skilled performance in emergency psychiatric/medical rapidly changing situations, with a proven ability to match the clients’ needs and resources.
- Demonstrated ability to recognize and intervene around emergent health problems.
- Demonstrated knowledge and ability to apply Mental Health Act and all other legislation related to the practice of mental health nursing.
- Safe preparation and administration of medication as per the Royal policy and procedure.
- Skilled ability to work in a primary nursing delivery system.
- Work in a manner that is in compliance with staff and patient/client safety practices, policies and procedures of The Royal.
- Ensure a work environment that is conducive to The Royal’s Anti-Racism, Harassment, & Discrimination Free Workplace Policy.
Qualifications:
- Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- BSc N. is preferred.
- Certification in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing and Gerontology is preferred.
- Minimum of two years’ recent experience in Geriatric Nursing and Psychiatry preferred.
- Understanding of MHA and relevant legislation.
- Evidence reflecting the belief that professional education is a lifelong responsibility and includes both formal and informal approaches to learning.
- Demonstrated willingness to change psychiatric approaches to reflect best practice standards in service delivery for this challenging patient population.
- GPA (Gentle Persuasive Approach) training and P.I.E.C.E.S training, or other related dementia care training is preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the standards of Canadian Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing practice.
- Knowledge of changes associated with the aging process and areas of vulnerability.
- Knowledge of psychopharmacology and problems which complicate drug therapy with seniors.
- WHMIS update in preceding 12 months.
- Fire Training update in the past 12 months.
- CPR Certification within the last 12 months.
- Completion of Prevention of Violence in the Workplace training (C.P.I.) required.
- Must complete RAI-MH training upon hire. Input into the RAI-MH system is required on an ongoing basis.
- Recognized ability for demonstrating self knowledge, strong leadership and communication skills and acts a role model to build and maintain positive collegial relationships.
- Basic computer skills required.
- English level A- is mandatory in oral expression/comprehension, reading comprehension and written expression.Bilingual (French/English) is considered an asset.
