The SANE course is 5 days long in the classroom, often in Truro, with a 2-day Skills Lab usually in Halifax on a weekend. VON orientation and e-learning are also required with a date to be determined.

Job Summary:

The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program is a provincial, community-based intervention service that is provided, in this region, to Colchester and Cumberland counties and the Eastern Shore area. It is managed/administrated by the VON Colchester East Hants site. Specially trained RNs and NPs provide timely, professional, confidential, trauma-informed medical and forensic care and referrals for aftercare to post-pubescent victims of sexual assault and domestic violence, of all genders and orientations, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

SANE nurses report to the Manager of the SANE program. SANE nurses will be hired as an employee of VON and all training will be provided. The SANE nurse role may include, but is not limited to:

1. Medical and forensic examinations
2. Evidence collection
3. Documentation
4. Education
5. Providing referrals
6. Collection of statistical data
7. Providing testimony in court

On-call SANEs must attend scheduled monthly meetings and training sessions as necessary. On-call SANEs must have access to reliable transportation and be able to respond to a call to the designated emergency department (Truro, Amherst, Musquodoboit Valley) within 1.5 hours.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Function as part of the on-call SANE response team, which may include:
1. Available for approximately 4 24-hr shifts per month (or equivalent in 12-hr to 36-hr blocks)
2. Respond to calls at designated site within 1.5 hours.
3. Triage clients to determine if any necessary medical treatment is needed before forensic exam.
4. Conduct medical-forensic exams including proper collection of photographic and other evidence, accurately conducting sexual assault medical forensic interviews, and maintaining chain of evidence.
5. Testing for and administering prophylactic medications including emergency contraception.
6. Document all aspects of the encounter with the victim as per regulatory requirements, including mandatory duty to report as appropriate.
7. Awareness of other community programs related to sexual assault.
8. Testify in legal proceedings as necessary.
9. Maintain confidentiality.
10. Use a trauma-informed approach when caring for victims/survivors.
11. Provide client-centered and culturally competent care.
12. Maintain accountability based on the standards established by the Nova Scotia College of Nursing, policies and protocols of the individual healthcare facilities and the SANE program, and ethical and legal requirements of professional practice.
13. Maintain competency through regular practice, attending monthly staff meetings, and professional development opportunities.
14. Access confidential debriefing services as needed to maintain emotional and physical wellness.
15. Optional opportunities to teach or present information to schools and community organizations.

External and Internal Relationships:

Engages clients with a trauma-informed approach, allowing clients to choose options and treatments best suited to their preferences. Knowledge of community services related to sexual assault response and care at all stages, and understands the importance of maintaining good relationships with these partners.

Education, Designations and Experience:

1. Must be licensed as a RN or NP in the province of Nova Scotia.
2. Current CPR required.
3. Must be available to complete NS community-based SANE training upon hire with commitment to complete full SANE certification at a later date.
4. Previous SANE experience a strong asset.
5. Three (3) years of experience in the community, women's health, or acute care preferred.
6. Experience in forensic or emergency nursing, mental health, women's health, sexual health, crisis response, counseling, or trauma-informed care, is an asset.
7. Knowledge of the criminal justice system is an asset.

Working conditions and physical demands:

This role requires a detail-oriented approach in a dynamic environment, with physical activity including lifting, carrying (using proper techniques), bending, reaching, kneeling, and other movements that emphasize good body mechanics. Individuals in the role are required to walk, sit, stand, and climb stairs throughout the day, with some tasks requiring fine hand movements.
