Job description

Southlake will be offering a paid Critical Care Nursing Program through the Michener Institute, based on the qualifications at the bottom of the posting.

Winter cohort dates: January 13, 2025 (Hospital orientation to start on January 7, 2025).
February 24, 2025 (Hospital orientation to start on February 18, 2025).
Spring cohort dates: April 7, 2025 (Hospital orientation to start on April 1, 2025).
May 19, 2025 (Hospital orientation to start on April 22, 2025).

About the Critical Care Nursing Program through the Michener Institute:

  1. 11 week course
  2. Paid full-time hours
  3. Combination of instructor-led virtual and clinical education
  4. Formal 3 month mentorship offered after course completion
  5. Additional in-house opportunities for further certifications after course completion

Job Summary:
The Registered Nurse (RN) role models clinical excellence and the core competencies of the practice standards of the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), as well as the policies and procedures of Southlake Regional Health Centre (Southlake). The RN works collaboratively as a member of the health care team. All nurses make a commitment to lifelong learning.

The successful candidate will be motivated, self-directed and a key member of a dynamic interdisciplinary team with defined roles focused on quality patient care and patient flow. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing excellent care to a diverse acute medical patient population in a fast-paced setting.

Main Duties & Responsibilities:
  1. Provides patient and family focused care within the RN scope of practice, based on the three factor framework of the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  2. Functions in accordance with established hospital policies and procedures, including emergency codes.
  3. Ensures that practice is consistent with entry to practice competencies, standards of practice, guidelines, and legislation.
  4. Communicates effectively with patients, families, and all members of the healthcare team.
  5. Practices collaboratively with members of the healthcare team to provide elements of care for patients/clients with complex health issues.
  6. Provides consultation and/or clinical support to peers as needed.
  7. Contributes to the assessment and documentation of each patient's health status on an ongoing basis.
  8. Assists in the development and implementation of the Plan of Care and evaluates its ongoing effectiveness.
  9. Assists in the orientation/preceptorship of new staff members and students to the clinical units.
  10. Acts as a role model and champion to identify and integrate safe, best practices into daily activities to foster the delivery of safe and exemplary care.
  11. Takes a leadership role in the coordination of patient care in assigned area.
  12. Assumes charge nurse role when assigned.
  13. Effectively utilizes human and material resources.
  14. Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of clinical pathways.
  15. Other duties as assigned by Manager/delegate.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  1. Current RN Certificate of Registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  2. Three (3) to five (5) years’ recent critical care nursing experience or Critical Care Certificate.
  3. ACLS preferred.
  4. Demonstrated excellence in communication, both written and verbal.
  5. Demonstrated problem assessment skills.
  6. Demonstrated commitment to customer service and teamwork.
  7. Demonstrated individual leadership skills.

Critical Care Sponsorship Qualifications:
  1. Current RN Certificate of Registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  2. Minimum one (1) to three (3) years’ of recent medical and/or surgical nursing experience preferred.
  3. BCLS current certification.
  4. Current ACLS preferred.
  5. Demonstrated critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  6. Demonstrated leadership abilities.
  7. Innovative and willing to learn.

Health & Safety Workplace Responsibilities:

As a condition of employment, you are required to submit proof of COVID-19 vaccination to the Hospital’s Occupational Health and Safety department. Successful candidates will be required to submit proof of COVID-19 vaccination (two doses) from the Ontario Ministry of Health website or other authorized source directly to the Occupational Health and Safety department.
