Requisition Details:

Employment Status: Permanent, Part-time (0.8 FTE)

Program: Corrections, Visiting Nursing

Number of Hours Bi-Weekly: 60

Work Schedule: Days, with an evening & weekend rotation

Job Summary:

Nurses who join our team receive diverse assignments and ongoing clinical education and training opportunities. These positions will be of interest to nurses who value client teaching, communication, autonomy, and decision-making, and find community nursing challenging and rewarding. Nurses will provide professional nursing consultation services on a wide variety of nursing issues in a corrections facility.

Responsibilities:

  1. Provide and manage high-quality and appropriate nursing care to all individuals and/or families in the community who are assigned to their care.
  2. Responsible for teaching and delegating tasks and functions to different levels of workers and to family members and others in accordance with the standards and scope of practice as determined by VON and the College of Registered Nurses of Nova Scotia.
  3. Comply with all standards, policies, procedures, and legislative requirements.
  4. Participate as a member of the healthcare team in relevant committees and working groups.

Qualifications:

  • Registration with NSCN and a graduate from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Mental health and addictions experience is considered an asset.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Emergency room experience is an asset.
  • Demonstrated competencies in observation, independent assessment, and health education.
  • Experience providing nursing care to adults and seniors.
  • Ability to effectively use software for client documents, word processing, and communication.
  • Experience conducting comprehensive nursing assessments.
  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Valid CPR C / First Aid certification required.
  • Must have a personal vehicle, a current driver’s license, and proof of vehicle insurance.
  • A current and original copy of a satisfactory Criminal Records Check is required upon employment start.
  • Vulnerable Sector Search and/or Child Abuse Registry Check may be required.
  • Ability to speak French is an asset in French Designated areas.
  • Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Working conditions and physical demands: This role requires a detail-oriented approach in a dynamic environment, with physical activities including lifting, carrying (using proper techniques), bending, reaching, kneeling, and other movements emphasizing good body mechanics. Individuals are required to walk, sit, stand, and climb stairs throughout the day, with some tasks requiring fine hand movements.
