Job summary

Extendicare is seeking a part-time Registered Nurse in Ottawa, Ontario to provide direct resident care and medication administration while documenting care in line with regulatory standards and Extendicare policies.

You will collaborate with the Director of Health and Wellness and Director of Care to coordinate care plans, supervise unregulated care providers, and support infection control and quality initiatives across the nursing department.

Qualifications

  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse in the applicable Province/State.
  • Experience with seniors and unregulated care providers.
  • Education and experience in gerontology, rehabilitation, or long-term care is asset.
  • Strong written and oral communication, critical thinking, care coordination, time management and customer focus.
  • Ability to delegate to unregulated care providers and maintain governing college competencies.
  • Computer literacy and MS Office.

Responsibilities

  • Complete and keep residents’ care assessments, service plans and documentation up to date.
  • Assist with scheduling care conferences and participate in conferences.
  • Work with DHW/DOC to facilitate move-ins and transfers.
  • Order and safekeep drugs and administer in compliance with regulations and Extendicare policies.
  • Provide resident/family education and support.
  • Supervise resident self-medication assessment and audits.
  • Supervise and delegate care and medication to unregulated care providers.
  • Plan, coordinate, manage and evaluate the resident’s care plan with stakeholders.
  • Coordinate nursing team assignments for efficient service delivery.
  • Respond to changes in resident condition and medical emergencies.
  • Act as supervisor in absence of DHW/DOC and Executive Directors.
  • Address resident/family concerns and communicate with DHW/DOC/Executive Director.
  • Coordinate Infection Prevention and Control, Health and Safety and Clinical Programs.
  • Coordinate nursing students from approved institutions.
  • Uphold Extendicare values and Code of Conduct.
  • Complete any other assigned tasks.

Job Description Registered Nurse

Mission: Reporting to the Director of Health and Wellness (DHW) / Director of Care (DOC), the Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible to provide direct resident care and medication administration and document care in compliance with regulatory and Extendicare Resident Health and Wellness standards and policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  1. To complete and ensure residents’ care assessments, service plans and documentation are up to date and changes communicated to DHW/DOC for billings
  2. To assist with scheduling of residents’ care conferences and participate in conferences
  3. To work closely with DHW/DOC to facilitate residents’ move in and transfers
  4. To order and safe keep drugs and narcotics and administer in compliance with all regulatory requirements and Extendicare policies and procedures
  5. To facilitate and provide resident/family education
  6. To supervise resident self medication assessment and audits
  7. To supervise and delegate care and medication administration responsibilities to Unregulated Care Providers in compliance with applicable regulations and Extendicare policy and procedures
  8. To plan, coordinate, manage and evaluate the resident’s care plan working with the resident/substitute decision maker, physicians, nursing and interdisciplinary team and contracted service providers
  9. To coordinate nursing team’s resident care assignments to ensure efficient and timely delivery of services to residents
  10. To respond to and manage significant changes in residents’ condition and or medical emergencies
  11. To act as supervisor and coordinate emergency response in absence of DHW/DOC and Executive Directors
  12. To respond to resident/family concerns and ensure appropriate action taken and or concern communicated to DHW/DOC/Executive Director and other departments
  13. To assist the DHW/DOC in the coordination, implementation and monitoring of Infection Prevention and Control, Health and Safety and Clinical Programs and Quality Plans for the Nursing Department
  14. To coordinate and supervise the scheduling and assignment of nursing students from approved education institutions
  15. To uphold and promote the organization’s values and philosophy relating particularly to ethics, morality, and integrity as set out in Extendicare’s Code of Conduct
  16. To complete all other tasks as assigned
Qualifications
  1. Current registration as a Registered Nurse in applicable Province/State
  2. Experience working with seniors and unregulated care providers
  3. Education and experience in gerontology, rehabilitation, community/complex/long term care an asset
  4. Must possess strong written and oral communication, critical thinking, care coordination, time management and customer focus skills
  5. Must have demonstrated sound clinical knowledge and ability to delegate to unregulated care providers
  6. Must maintain competencies as per the governing College standards
  7. Skills in use of computer and Microsoft Office applications
  8. Current (within 6 months) Vulnerable Position/Sector Screening (VPS)
