Job Description
Reporting to the Director of Health and Wellness (DHW) / Director of Care (DOC), the Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing direct resident care, medication administration, and documenting care in compliance with regulatory standards and Extendicare policies.
Key Responsibilities
- Complete and ensure residents’ care assessments, service plans, and documentation are up-to-date; communicate changes to DHW/DOC for billing.
- Assist with scheduling and participate in residents’ care conferences.
- Work closely with DHW/DOC to facilitate residents’ move-ins and transfers.
- Order, safeguard, and administer drugs and narcotics according to regulatory requirements and policies.
- Facilitate and provide education to residents and families.
- Supervise resident self-medication assessments and audits.
- Delegate care and medication responsibilities to Unregulated Care Providers following regulations and policies.
- Plan, coordinate, and evaluate residents’ care plans with the interdisciplinary team and family/decision-makers.
- Manage nursing team’s care assignments for efficient service delivery.
- Respond to significant changes in residents’ conditions or medical emergencies.
- Act as supervisor and coordinate emergency responses in the absence of DHW/DOC and Executive Directors.
- Address resident/family concerns and communicate appropriately with the team.
- Assist in implementing infection prevention, health and safety, and quality programs.
- Coordinate scheduling and supervision of nursing students.
- Uphold Extendicare’s values and Code of Conduct.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education, Credentials, and Experience
- Current registration as a Registered Nurse in the applicable Province/State.
- Experience working with seniors and unregulated care providers.
- Education and experience in gerontology, rehabilitation, or long-term care are assets.
- Strong communication, critical thinking, care coordination, time management, and customer service skills.
- Ability to delegate effectively and maintain competencies per College standards.
- Proficiency in computer and Microsoft Office applications.
- Current (within 6 months) Vulnerable Position/Sector Screening (VPS).
