The Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager Emergency Care the Resource Nurse is responsible and accountable for the application of current theory and research in the delivery of family-centered patient care consistent with the philosophy objectives vision and mission of IWK Health.

Upon completion of unit-specific orientations nurses in the resource pool will be assigned each shift to one of five care areas: Emergency Department (ED) Hematology Oncology Nephrology (6 Link) and Medical Surgical Neurosciences Unit (MSNU). Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and Pediatric Medical Unit (PMU).

Hours of Work

75 hours bi-weekly 11.25 hour shifts (0700-1900 and 1900-0700) as per rotating schedule.

Your Qualifications
  • Graduate of an approved school of nursing and currently registered or eligible to become registered with the Nova Scotia College of Nursing (NSCN)
  • Minimum one (1) year of experience (within the last five (5) years) in pediatric nursing required
  • Emergency Critical care nursing experience is an asset.
  • Current successful completion of a Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada Basic Life Support Level (BLS) Program within the last 12 months or successful completion of a BLS Renewal Challenge Certificate is required.
  • Excellent flexibility and collaboration skills and adjustment to varying patient workloads required.
  • Demonstrated strong communication skills are required.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills including clinical judgment problem-solving skills and strong decision-making ability required.
  • Commitment to obtain Pediatric Advanced Life Support within 2 years of the hiring date is required.
  • Competency in other languages is considered an asset.
  • Where there are no qualified candidates who meet the minimum requirements for one (1) year of recent pediatric experience consideration may be given to Registered Nurses without the required experience.
