Unit Summary:

Hamilton Health Sciences is one of Canada's largest and most diverse hospitals, providing advanced care and training future health professionals in collaboration with McMaster University and Mohawk College. We serve residents of south central Ontario with a staff of 18,000 including physicians, researchers, and volunteers.

Position Summary:

Located at Hamilton’s downtown core, the Hamilton General Hospital (HGH) is home to the Hamilton Center for Vascular Health (HCVH). As a center of excellence in cardiovascular and stroke care, we service a population of 2.3 million residents. The ICU West is a 16-bed, level 3 tertiary and quaternary unit performing the highest volume of cardiovascular surgical procedures in the province. The Registered Nurse uses a multidisciplinary approach to coordinate and evaluate patient care, treating highly complex patients with advanced modalities such as ECMO, Impella, intra-aortic balloon pump, and CRRT. The ICU supports the Critical Care Response Team, providing expert care outside the ICU. We are a Royal College Accredited training program affiliated with McMaster University, offering learning opportunities and conducting world-renowned research.

Schedule Work Hours:

Rotating days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. This position is a job share.

Qualifications:
  • Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification
  • Recent (within 2 years) nursing experience in a Level 3 critical care unit (as defined by CCSO)
  • Experience in Hemodynamic and Cardiac Monitoring, Mechanical Ventilation, Resuscitation, Shock Management, and other advanced life support interventions (testing may be required)
  • Knowledge of conflict resolution, HHS Values Based Code of Conduct, and Mutual Respect
  • Critical thinking skills for prioritization and adapting to rapid changes
  • Service Excellence behaviors in patient and family interactions
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development
  • Understanding of Problem Solving and Continuous Quality Improvement processes
