Job summary

IWK Health in Halifax seeks a Clinic Nurse in the Orthopaedic Clinic to provide comprehensive pediatric family‑centered care. You will assess needs during visits and calls, create care plans, and coordinate pre/post‑op and follow‑up care with the team.

Reporting to the Ambulatory Surgical Care Manager, you will educate families, lead quality initiatives, and support learners in a busy orthopaedic clinic environment. Experience in pediatric orthopaedics and teamwork is essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in nursing required; commensurate experience considered.
• Registered or eligible with NSCN; CPR Level-C within last 12 months.
• Minimum three years pediatric surgical nursing experience.

Responsibilities

• Assess patient/family needs during clinic visits and calls.
• Develop and revise individualized care plans including pre/post‑op care.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager, Ambulatory Surgical Care, the Clinic Nurse works collaborative with the Orthopaedic Care Team to provide comprehensive family-centered care to children and their families in the Orthopaedic Clinic. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: accurately assessing patient/family needs during clinic visits and telephone consultations; developing an individualized plan of care and continuously evaluating the plan of care making revisions as necessary, including the planning and coordination or pre-op, post-op, and follow‑up care; liaising with the inpatient unit in the coordination of care for the patient population; acting as a clinical resource regarding patient care issues (e.g., car seat program,etc.); providing ongoing education and in-servicing on orthopaedic surgery topics; participating in team specific, program, and Health Centre committees (E.g., Orthopaedic Care Team and Clinic Meetings, and Accreditation Team, etc.); facilitating decision‑making by promoting collaboration and cooperation amongst team members; participating and implementing quality initiatives with the team including the development and maintenance of policies, protocols, standards, guidelines, and educational materials for patients and families; participating in and promoting evidence based practice; in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team members, and Clinical Leader of the Orthopaedic Clinic, participates in identifying issues that have potential or actual impact on clinical care; liaising with appropriate staff in triaging clinic referrals; supporting educational needs for a variety of learners in clinic setting; and overseeing the smooth and efficient running of the Orthopaedic Clinic.

Your Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required. Commensurate experience and education will be considered.
• Registered, or eligible to be registered, with the Nova Scotia College of Nurses (NSCN) required.
• Successful completion of CPR Level-C Healthcare Provider within the last 12 months required.
• Minimum three years recent pediatric surgical nursing experience required.
• Recent pediatric orthopaedic nursing experience preferred.
• Demonstrated understanding of the care of a child/youth with Orthopaedic conditions.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within an interprofessional team and to work independently required.
• Demonstrated critical thinking skills, including clinical judgment, problem solving, and decision making abilities required.
• Demonstrated commitment to professional development and practice required.
• Demonstrated effective communication (verbal & written), interpersonal, and leadership skills required.

• Demonstrated experience and competence in OPOR CIS & Meditech/PCI an asset.
• Competency in other languages an asset; French, preferred.
