Job summary

IWK Health in Halifax is seeking a Clinic Nurse for the Orthopaedic Clinic, Children’s Medical Care. This temporary 40% FTE hourly position supports pre‑op, post‑op and follow‑up care under the Ambulatory Surgical Care Manager.

The successful candidate will have a Bachelor of Nursing, NSCN registration, CPR Level-C, and at least three years in pediatric surgical nursing; pediatric orthopaedic experience is preferred. French is a plus.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required.
• Registered, or eligible to be registered, with the NSCN.
• CPR Level-C Healthcare Provider within the last 12 months.
• Minimum three years recent pediatric surgical nursing experience.
• Recent pediatric orthopaedic nursing experience preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to work in an interprofessional team and independently.
• CPR/First aid and strong clinical documentation skills.

Responsibilities

• Accurately assessing patient/family needs during clinic visits and phone calls.
• Developing and evaluating an individualized plan of care incl. pre/post/op follow-up.
• Liaising with inpatient unit for care coordination of pediatric orthopaedic patients.
• Providing ongoing education and in‑servicing on orthopaedic topics.
• Facilitating team decisions and promoting evidence‑based practice.
• Overseeing smooth operation of the Orthopaedic Clinic.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager, Ambulatory Surgical Care, the Clinic Nurse works collaborative with the Orthopaedic Care Team to provide comprehensive family-centered care to children and their families in the Orthopaedic Clinic. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: accurately assessing patient/family needs during clinic visits and telephone consultations; developing an individualized plan of care and continuously evaluating the plan of care making revisions as necessary, including the planning and coordination or pre-op, post-op, and follow-up care; liaising with the inpatient unit in the coordination of care for the patient population; acting as a clinical resource regarding patient care issues (e.g., car seat program,etc.); providing ongoing education and in-servicing on orthopaedic surgery topics; participating in team specific, program, and Health Centre committees (E.g., Orthopaedic Care Team and Clinic Meetings, and Accreditation Team, etc.); facilitating decision-making by promoting collaboration and cooperation amongst team members; participating and implementing quality initiatives with the team including the development and maintenance of policies, protocols, standards, guidelines, and educational materials for patients and families; participating in and promoting evidence based practice; in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team members, and Clinical Leader of the Orthopaedic Clinic, participates in identifying issues that have potential or actual impact on clinical care; liaising with appropriate staff in triaging clinic referrals; supporting educational needs for a variety of learners in clinic setting; and overseeing the smooth and efficient running of the Orthopaedic Clinic.

Your Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required. Commensurate experience and education will be considered.
• Registered, or eligible to be registered, with the Nova Scotia College of Nurses (NSCN) required.
• Successful completion of CPR Level-C Healthcare Provider within the last 12 months required.
• Minimum three years recent pediatric surgical nursing experience required.
• Recent pediatric orthopaedic nursing experience preferred.
• Demonstrated understanding of the care of a child/youth with Orthopaedic conditions.
