Job summary

North Bay Regional Health Centre in Ontario seeks a registered nurse to join the Regional Specialized Mental Health - Dual Diagnosis team. The role focuses on intervention for adults with developmental disabilities and mental health concerns, delivering care within a multidisciplinary setting and maintaining safety and quality standards.

You must hold a College of Nurses of Ontario certificate, current BLS for HCP, GPA certificate, and have 2-3 years of relevant experience.

Qualifications

  • Current Certificate of Registration ~ College of Nurses of Ontario in good standing required.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers (HCP) certificate is required (within the last twelve months)
  • Gentle Persuasive Approach (GPA) Certificate required
  • Minimum (2-3) years experience working effectively with individuals with developmental disabilities, dual diagnosis, and/or autism (within the last 2-3 years) required
  • Knowledge of applicable legislation (i.e. Mental Health Act, PHIPA, QCIPA, etc.) required
  • Class G license and driver’s abstract required
  • Knowledge and experience in facilitating conflict resolution required
  • Demonstrated knowledge of psychotropic medications, symptom management and health teaching required
  • Knowledge and experience with providing specialized programming for individuals living with a dual diagnosis
  • Knowledge of consent and capacity issues and legislation involving this population (e.g. Public Guardian and Trustee, Substitute Decisions Maker Act, Mental Health Act, Health Care Consent Act)
  • Knowledge of Recovery Oriented Practice Supporting Patient Choice
  • PIECES certificate an asset

Department: Regional Specialized Mental Health - Dual Diagnosis (Birch/Maple)

Birch & Maple Lodge is a specialized service that offers intervention to those living with dual diagnosis (moderate to profound developmental disability and mental health concerns). The primary goal of Birch & Maple Lodge supports adults to optimize independence and develop the skills necessary to live successfully and productively in the community. We meet the needs of this specialized population through intensive, time-limited assessment and intervention services based on best practices in dual diagnosis and intellectual disabilities. We provide a highly skilled multidisciplinary team who work with patients, families and community-based services to alleviate any barriers to community living.

QUALIFICATIONS
Certification/Experience/Knowledge

  • Ability to provide health teaching to individuals and groups required
  • Must be committed to continuing education on an annual basis and demonstrate commitment to quality improvement required
  • Ability to effectively assume a leadership role as a collaborative member of the health team required
  • Ability to assume responsibility for patient care in a total patient care climate required
  • Able to meet the physical demands required to provide nursing care to all patients required
  • Ability to problem-solve and function in fast-paced environment required
  • Excellent demonstrated assessment, critical thinking and intervention skills required
  • Must demonstrate basic computer knowledge
  • Must demonstrate commitment to ensure personal safety, safety of fellow workers, patients, volunteers, and visitors
  • Ability to support and contribute to a culture of safety and prevention of adverse health events required
  • Must demonstrate good attendance and work record
  • Bilingualism (Advanced level English/French) is an asset. All unilingual candidates are encouraged to apply and may be considered if the identified French requirement has been met or there are no successful bilingual candidates. A formal French test will be conducted to evaluate the proficiency level.
