Are you a Registered Nurse seeking an opportunity to directly impact the recovery of medical and surgical patients within an acclaimed specialty area of care? Mount Sinai Hospital’s Inflammatory Bowel/Surgical unit is part of our renowned Centre for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Medical care and surgical interventions provided to our IBD patients can be life-changing in many respects, and our nurses are key supporters throughout their inpatient journey.

This specialization will not only deepen your clinical proficiency but also provide a sense of fulfillment by directly contributing to the well-being of patients dealing with complex digestive issues.

Is this you?
You are seeking to advance essential nursing competencies. RNs on this team develop in-depth knowledge of simple and complex wound care that puts them at great advantage in their nursing career. This includes simple and complicated ostomy care and VAC dressings. You will also gain experience in complex pain management strategies such as Ketamine, lidocaine infusion and local nerve blocks.

If you are interested in this specialization but lack experience, this unit offers a great entry-point complete with highly supportive education and training. This unit offers full time mentorship (4-6 weeks) which includes multiple check-in’s to ensure you’re confident in providing high quality care to this patient population. Senior nurses on this team have extensive expertise in IBD care, including post-op care and responding to potential complications. They are eager to teach and support our nurses who are new to this specialization or new to the profession.

About this unit:
We are a 28-bed unit and member of Sinai Health’s Centre for Inflammatory Bowel Disease devoted to the inpatient medical and surgical management of clients with IBD. The unit primarily specializes in IBD care, while also offering a range of additional services including General Surgery, Surgical Oncology, and Gastrointestinal Medicine (GI).

You’ll have the opportunity to acquire specialized knowledge and skills in the clinical care of Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis, in addition to pre and post-operative patient care.

In this role you will:

  • Provide patient assessments and post-operative care
  • Conduct assessment and interventions related to central/peripheral infusion therapy
  • Manage simple and complex wound care using such methods as VAC dressing and advanced ostomy care
  • Administer medications including TPN management
  • Provide complex pain and symptom management, acute and chronic pain (e.g. PCA pump, epidurals, continuous peripheral nerve blocks, Ketamine and lidocaine infusion)
  • Perform other duties consistent with the job classification, as required

Job Requirements

Mandatory

  • Current certificate of registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
  • Graduate of a CNO-approved bachelor’s degree in nursing program, or equivalent combined education and experience
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification

Preferred

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN). Applicants in their final year or near completion will be considered

Skills and Knowledge

  • Excellent critical thinking, decision making and problem solving skills
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills
  • Commitment to patient and family centred care
  • Commitment to professional practice and personal development
  • Commitment to shared leadership and team-based decision making
  • Demonstrated satisfactory work performance and attendance history
