CA$39.07/hr - CA$56.00/hr

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Program Manager and the Medical Director, you will share responsibility with other staff members for the routine clinical activities of the Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) program, including but not limited to the following: surveillance and reporting of healthcare associated infections; provision of IPAC consultation / advice regarding infection control issues; outbreak management and investigation; policy development and implementation; committee activities; education of staff, medical staff, and students.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Active surveillance for healthcare associated infections, and calculation and reporting of healthcare associated infection rates
  • Active surveillance for, and timely reporting of, reportable communicable diseases externally to the Medical Officer of Health, Ottawa Public Health and internally, to Occupational Health and Safety
  • Investigation, management, and reporting of sentinel infection control events (e.g., infectious disease outbreaks), including development of formal reports and provision of written recommendations to prevent recurrences
  • Participation in quality improvement initiatives related to infection control (e.g., Solutions for Patient Safety teams, IPAC-led initiatives)
  • Acting as a resource for staff and medical staff at CHEO, and occasionally outside of CHEO, on pediatric infection control issues, including membership/participation on various CHEO committees and involvement in planned construction and renovation activities
  • Education of staff, medical staff, students, and agency staff regarding current infection prevention and control standards/requirements (such as routine practices - hand hygiene, use of personal protective equipment and additional precautions, etc.)
  • Supporting inpatient teams with day-to-day patient isolation management
  • Involvement in local (regional), provincial and national infection control initiatives as requested by external organizations
  • Participation in infection control research, and professional development activities
  • Completes documentation according to Hospital and Unit standards.
  • Perform work in accordance with the provisions of the Occupational health and Safety act and Regulations and all CHEO corporate/departmental policies and procedures related to Occupational Health & Safety
  • Perform other duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) (Preferred)
  • Member of the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) (Essential)
  • Completed/enrolled in IPAC-Canada/APIC endorsed infection control course, or recent infection control experience (Essential)
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) Certification (Essential)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification or completion within 12 months (Essential)
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Certification or completion within 12 months (Essential)
  • Minimum five (5) years pediatric clinical care experience (Essential)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook) (Essential)
  • Independent learning and problem-solving skills (Essential)
  • Leadership skills, including critical decision-making with limited information (Essential)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills (Essential)
  • Ability to negotiate effectively with various disciplines internally/externally (Essential)
