Job Description

This is a temporary full-time assignment up to approximately twelve (12) months.

Are you a Registered Nurse wanting to build a truly well-rounded nursing skillset? Mount Sinai Hospital's 10 North General Internal Medicine Unit offers an opportunity to gain broad-based medical experience. You'll encounter a wide range of complex cases, including critical care transfers and specialized geriatric care, developing the clinical judgment skills essential for a successful nursing career.

We're committed to supporting your professional growth. Our leaders empower you to build your skills and make a meaningful difference in patients' lives. Benefit from experienced mentors, a dedicated Clinical Nurse Specialist, and manageable patient ratios that allow you to truly focus on quality patient care. If you're ready for a fulfilling opportunity that will shape you into an exceptional nurse, keep reading to discover why this opportunity stands apart.

Is this you?

You are curious and self-aware. This unit's diverse patient population offers great learning opportunities for those with an inquisitive mindset. Additionally, those who reflect on their knowledge and identify areas for improvement thrive in a general medicine setting.

You value autonomy within a supportive structure. Nurses on this team self-schedule breaks and organize their workdays to suit their workflow. Medical directives specific to internal medicine allow you to perform procedures and make decisions independently. Our structured development plan for new hires facilitates a smooth transition from novice to experienced nurse, with outlined professional development opportunities at each step to ensure you meet goals and progress.

This unit is also a great opportunity for early-career nurses. Gain exposure to various diagnoses and procedures, developing a comprehensive toolkit of nursing skills. You'll advance your critical thinking skills by supporting acutely ill patients within a team where experienced nurses offer guidance and mentoring.

About the 10 North General Internal Medicine Unit

We are a 28-bed general internal medicine unit specializing in acute care for elders (ACE). Benefit from manageable nurse-to-patient ratios: 4 patients per nurse during the day and 5-6 patients at night. Our patients are typically admitted with diverse and complex medical needs, including pneumonia, congestive heart failure, delirium, infection, cancer, and other acute and chronic illnesses.

Our patients are often socially, functionally and medically complex which offers RN’s unique opportunities to develop specialized expertise in respiratory medicine, oncology, palliative care, pain management, wound care, and geriatrics. With Canada's aging population, these future-ready skills are highly transferable and valuable throughout the health care system.

Nurses on this team note the supportive leadership structure as one of the key factors in the high employee retention on this unit. Our goal is to coach and mentor our nurses and make sure they can continue to develop their skills in an environment that feels safe.

In this role you will:

  • Provide direct patient and family centered care for general internal medicine patients
  • Complete physical assessments on patients
  • Administer medications and provide any necessary care (wound care, IV insertion and management, monitoring drains, getting patients ready for procedures, etc.)
  • Attend nursing rounds and participate in patient/family meetings
  • Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team, including doctors, pharmacists, social workers, clinical nurse specialists, etc.
  • Apply a broad range of nursing skills including (but not exclusive to) CADD pumps, nephrostomy tubes, complex wounds, central lines, enteral feeding tubes, TPN, CIWA monitoring, managing a Code Blue, and chemotherapy
  • Perform other duties consistent with the job classification, as required
