Job summary

CHEO in Ottawa, ON is seeking a Registered Nurse to join the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) teams. You will provide focused nursing care for critically ill children under supervision, and collaborate with families.

You will be trained across NICU and PICU, participate in an orientation, and apply nursing processes per Ontario standards to support patient-centred care and family involvement.

Qualifications

  • Nurse must hold a nursing degree and be registered with the CNO.
  • Demonstrated family-centered care and strong communication abilities.
  • PALS/CPR/NRP certifications or equivalent retraining required.
  • Experience with pediatric acute/critical care preferred.

POSTING SUMMARY
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a 10-bed state-of-the-art critical care unit designed to meet the needs of our patients and families. Our department provides comprehensive services for a wide variety of critically ill medical and surgical patients with acute, life-threatening disease and injury.

The PICU provides intensive care for a wide range of complex, rapidly changing medical, surgical and traumatic disorders occurring in pediatric patients aged 18 and under. Areas of subspecialty care includes congenital heart disease, cardiovascular surgery, respiratory failure, neurosurgery. immunodeficiencies, hematologic and oncologic emergencies, sepsis, and multi-organ system dysfunction. Available advanced treatment modalities include cardiovascular surgery (neonatal, pediatric, and cardiac ECMO), high frequency ventilation, nitric oxide therapy, non-invasive ventilation, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is a 21 bed designated Level lllb Unit providing the highest level of intensive care to the most vulnerable and severely ill preterm and term infants. Our NICU provides leading academic health services including surgical and sub-specialty services for infants with congenital abnormalities, neurosurgical disorders, cardiovascular anomalies, sepsis, and genetic disorders. Available advanced treatment modalities include high frequency ventilation, JET ventilation, Nitric Oxide therapy, non-invasive ventilation and therapeutic hypothermia.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

As a member of the Critical Care Flex Team, you will be trained in both NICU and PICU. CHEO provides an extensive orientation and support period to ensure a smooth transition in to practice on the unit. In keeping with the mission statement of the hospital and the patient service unit, the nurse is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care for individual patients/families.

  • Effectively uses the nursing process
  • Practices according to the standards set by the College of Nurses of Ontario, the Hospital, and the patient service unit
  • Provides appropriate learning experiences for the patient and family to promote or maintain wellness, and to achieve an optimal quality of life
  • Is accountable for maintaining competence while developing the quality of his/ her professional nursing practice
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Baccalaureate Degree of Nursing (Preferred)
  • Current Certification of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (Essential)
  • Minimum 2 years paediatric acute care experience OR critical care experience OR neonatal experience OR other appropriate combinations of education and experience, along with the demonstrated knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the position, may be considered in lieu of stated education and experience (Essential)
  • Critical Care courses and Certification or other appropriate combination of education and experience (Preferred)
  • Critical Care experience with the ability to care for Hemodynamically unstable and ventilated patients(Preferred)
  • Demonstrated strong communication and interpersonal skills (Essential)
  • Demonstrated culturally sensitive approach to nursing care(Essential)
  • Demonstrated strong family centered care skills (Essential)
  • Current PALS certification OR successful completion of PALS certification within 12 months of hire (Essential)
  • Current CPR and NRP Certification (Essential)
  • Vulnerable Sector Check (Level 3) (Essential)
  • Bilingual (English/French) (Preferred)
