Registered Nurse- Algoma District Cancer Program- Temporary Part Time
  • Registered Nurse- Algoma District Cancer Program- Temporary Part Time
Purpose:

To provide safe and effective care for patients with cancer and to administer the specialized care and treatments using the standards of practice set out by the College of Nurses of Ontario and the standards and competencies set out by the Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology (CANO) and Cancer Care Ontario (CCO)

Duties:
  • Applies an integration of theory, research, experience and practical knowledge in providing holistic care for patients with cancer and their families within maximum scope of practice through protocols, practice guidelines/care paths and medical directives.
  • Provides holistic nursing care to meet the emotional, psychological, informational, spiritual and practical needs of patients throughout the spectrum of cancer care.
  • Acts as a proactive guide to help cancer patients navigate the complex maze of cancer treatment and care.
  • Is accountable for their own decision-making and actions, and maintaining competency to facilitate the best possible outcomes for patients by participating in professional and specialty nursing networks and organizations.
  • Participates in a collaborative practice with the oncologist sharing the care of the patient through a complementary relationship which is based on shared decision-making and joint problem solving.
  • Participates in evidence-based practice in order to facilitate the best possible outcomes for patients.
  • Administers chemotherapy and biotherapy and provides chemotherapy education, including the plan of care.
  • Provides support in the management of symptoms related to cancer and cancer treatment (systemic/radiation) including the management of mechanical devices used to deliver ambulatory infusions.
  • Provides assistance in planning corrective actions to ensure safety for patients and staff.
  • Is compliant with legislation, organizational and departmental, regulations, standards and procedures related to occupational health and safety.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Certificate of competency in Ontario.
  • Current certification in venipuncture (I.V. certification)
  • Current certification in the de Souza Provincial Standardized Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Course
  • Willingness to complete the CNA Certification in Oncology Nursing Canada (CONC) with the expectation it will be completed when eligibility requirements are met
Experience:
  • Two years’ previous acute patient care work experience.
  • Recent experience with chemotherapy or radiation therapy administration
Skills:
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills are necessary.
  • An attitude that demonstrates care and concern for the patient and family.
  • Demonstrated commitment to life-long learning by participating in ongoing education, self-reflective practice and maintaining an expert knowledge level.
  • Demonstrated Behavior consistent with Hospital Mission, Vision, Values and Standards of Performance.
