Join our team in the role of Registered Nurse (7M Psychiatry).

St. Joseph's Health Centre currently invites applications to join our mental health team as a Registered Nurse in the Adult Inpatient Mental Health Unit (7M) and Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). The RN will be part of an interprofessional care team caring for a highly acute mental health and/or addictions patient population, providing high-quality, patient- and family-centered nursing care within a trauma-informed framework in an acute care setting. This role supports patients in learning to manage their illnesses and supports their recovery journey while offering opportunities for professional growth in a rewarding, challenging environment.

Our 36-bed inpatient unit (including a psychiatric intensive care unit) serves adults 19 years and older, delivering holistic and accessible mental health services to patients and families. Affiliated with the University of Toronto, we strive to provide trauma-informed care and generate innovative partnerships that enhance quality of life. We are committed to professional development, research, innovation and student learning.

Responsibilities

The Registered Nurse will:

  • Provide high-quality, patient- and family-centered nursing care within a trauma-informed framework in an acute care setting.
  • Collaborate with an interprofessional care team to implement current evidence and best practice in plans of care and nursing services.
  • Support patients and families in planning and delivering care that promotes health and well-being, respects dignity, and recognizes families as essential partners in care.
  • Demonstrate adaptability and flexibility in a fast-paced mental health environment.
  • Pursue continuous professional development of nursing competencies.
  • Complete the Canadian Nurses Association Certificate in Psychiatric Nursing within two years of start date (where required).
Qualifications

Professional Registration

  • Currently registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.

Education / Training

  • Canadian Nurses Association (C.N.A) Certificate in Psychiatric Nursing on hire or willingness to complete within 2 years of start date.
  • Current BLS / CPR.
  • Prevention and Management of Aggressive Behaviour (or equivalent) required within 3 months of start date.

Experience

  • Two years of recent mental health and addictions nursing experience in an acute care setting required (recent within last 5 years). Candidates with a minimum of 6 months of experience may be considered at the Health Centre's sole discretion.

  • Recovery-focused skills in bio-psychosocial assessment, mental status assessments, differential diagnosis, treatment and transitional care of mental health and addictions patients.
  • Knowledge of legislation guiding mental health nursing practice (e.g., Mental Health Act, Health Care Consent Act, Child and Family Services Act).
  • Alignment with St. Joseph's Health Centre Values.
  • Ability to type notes and access/navigate hospital electronic systems for patient care.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development and learning.
  • Satisfactory attendance record.
