Job summary

The Louis Brier Home and Hospital in Vancouver, BC, is seeking a Staff Nurse to provide daily nursing care in a resident-centered environment. You will work within a largely Jewish community with diverse cultural backgrounds, under CRNBC standards and the organization’s values.

Responsibilities include assessments, care planning with the Interdisciplinary Team, medication administration using eMAR, charting, and mentoring new staff.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an approved School of Nursing with current registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • One year’s recent related experience in Long Term Care/Gerontology.
  • Intermediate First Aid and Basic Life Support from a WorkSafeBC-approved provider required.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate residents’ care needs on admission and ongoing basis.
  • Develop and adjust nursing care plans with Interdisciplinary Team; set and review goals with residents.
  • Ensure safety during tasks; report adverse events promptly.
  • Administer direct nursing care per care plans; assist with ADLs.
  • Receive physicians’ orders; arrange treatments and liaise with families and providers.
  • Dispense medications using eMAR and manage narcotics per procedures.
  • Maintain resident charts (MDS, Point Click Care, etc.).
  • Provide leadership and mentoring to new staff and students; participate in quality initiatives.
  • Contribute to policy development and safety projects; participate in committees.
  • Assist with orientation of new residents and staff; perform related duties.

Located in the Oakridge area of Vancouver, B.C., Louis Brier Home and Hospital is a 215-bed accredited Long Term care facility situated next to the Weinberg Residence, which is home to 40 Assisted Living and 20 Multilevel Care residents.

Purpose of the Position

Reporting to the Director of Care and under general direction of Clinical Nursing Leaders, the Staff Nurse is responsible for the daily nursing care of Residents. Care services are delivered within the framework of an elderly, predominantly-Jewish community with diverse ethnic and cultural experiences.

Within the context of a client and family centered care model, and in accordance with the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia (CRNBC) standards of practice, Codes of Ethics, and the established vision and values of the organization, provides nursing care for clients within an residential care facility setting by working independently and as a member of an interdisciplinary team. Enhances the quality of life from the perspective of the resident/family, and consults, confers, and collaborates with team members and other health care givers. Demonstrates expertise and leadership in nursing practice and maintains and advances clinical competence

Responsibilities

1. Evaluates residents' care needs by assessing residents on admission, and on an ongoing basis.

2. Develops appropriate nursing care plans in conjunction with Interdisciplinary Team; sets goals with the residents in relation to problems/needs as identified through assessments; evaluates care plans, and makes changes when necessary.

3. Ensures safety of residents during all tasks; reports any adverse events or near-misses to supervisor immediately.

4. Carries out orders specified in the care plan, and administers direct nursing care, including direct "hands on" ADL tasks e.g. transferring, feeding, bathing, toileting residents.

5. Receives physicians' orders; arranges for treatments, medications and other therapeutic services as needed. Liaises with families, physicians, visiting treatment agencies, as necessary.

6. Dispenses medications (using eMAR system) to residents; controls narcotics in accordance with established procedures.

7. Maintains unit records and residents' charts according to established format and facility guidelines (i.e. MDS, Point Click Care, and Excelleris).

8. Guides clinical experience of assigned new nursing staff and students; provides input to the nursing leaders as requested on individual’s progress in achieving established standards of nursing care.

9. Monitors efficient use of equipment and supplies on unit; reports equipment malfunctions and/or supplies needed.

10. Attends Staff Development and In-service education programs as required.

11. Provides input in development of resident care policies and procedures, as well as those, which pertain to safety of residents and staff. Participates in projects, studies and initiatives for improvement of care and services.

12. Provides leadership in interdisciplinary meetings, as necessary. Serves on other Committees where appropriate.

13. Assists with orientation of new residents and of new staff when necessary.

14. Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications
  • Graduated of an approved School of Nursing and one year’s recent related experience supplemented by current registration with British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Long Term Care / Gerontology training and experience is required.
  • Intermediate (Standard) First Aid and Basic Life Support from a WorkSafeBC approved provider is required.
  • PCC (Point Click Care) experience is preferred.
