Job description

POSITION SUMMARY

The Registered Kinesiologist (RKin) coordinates and provides assessment, monitoring, educational support and information to patients and families within the Cardiac Rehab Program.

The RKin also participates in other exercise-based/educational programs delegated by the Physiotherapy Manager and provides MHC employee ergonomic assessment/expertise as requested by the Occupational Health Nurse or Director of Human Resources.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Patient Assessment:
    Perform assessments according to the Health Science North Cardiac Rehabilitation Program (or MHC policy/procedure for other programs).
    Analyze the assessment findings and determine the patient activity, strengths and limitations.
    Assess the appropriateness of a cardiac rehabilitation intervention based on the assessment and refer the patient back to the appropriate physician if needed and if further diagnostic tests are required.
    Reassess patient’s condition and progress at appropriate intervals throughout the course of treatment.
  2. Treatment Planning:
    Compile a prioritized list of problems based on the patient’s assessment.
    Determine the appropriate treatment goals based on the assessment and on the patient’s input.
    Obtain consent for treatment explaining risks and benefits.
    Schedule and administer the treatment best suited to meet the treatment goals.
  3. Ongoing Treatment:
    Modify treatment plans and goals based on changes in the patient’s condition.
    Provide education to the patient and/or POA and/or caretakers regarding the disease/injury process, treatment rationale, safety measures and self-management.
    Demonstrate and instruct patient’s family as to ongoing treatment.
    Maintain progress notes and attendance records on treatment provided to patients.
    Provide ongoing support and counseling for cardiac risk factor management and behavior modification strategies.
    Assist program participants in recognizing the signs and symptoms of cardiovascular distress.
  4. Departmental Duties:
    Ensure cardiac rehab area, resources, materials and equipment are maintained.
    Collaborate with fellow members of the care team to ensure patients receive comprehensive, competent and appropriate care.
    Identify areas where the development of, or improvement to clinical and program protocols is needed; then assist in their development and implementation.
    Communicate with the HSN Cardiac Rehabilitation Program for meetings and education on a periodic and ongoing basis.
    Communicate with FHT professionals to update them on changes, remind them of referral process and services provided to their patients, on a periodic and ongoing basis.
  5. Occupational Health/Ergonomics:
    Provide ergonomics assessments as requested.
    Make recommendations for corrective actions to prevent injury through improved ergonomics, including purchase of equipment and tools and instruction of employees.
    Assist in updating/preparing educational material.
    Provide other reports, advice and expertise within scope of practice.
  6. Patient Safety:
    It is recognized that the processes employed by this staff position impact upon the safety and efficacy of MHC’s patient care activities.
    All incumbents are directed to therefore utilize processes that contribute to the overall safe culture environment of our hospital.
    This is a direct responsibility of each and every staff member of this organization.
  7. Health and Safety:
    Use and wear equipment and protective devices that are provided.
    Report to the supervisor absent or.
    Report the existence of hazards to the supervisor.
    Not remove or make ineffective any protective devices without providing an adequate temporary protective device.
    Operate equipment in a safe manner.
    Not engage in horseplay.
    Be familiar with procedures to be carried out in the event of a disaster (Emergency Preparedness Plans).

Proficiency in computer software applications: Meditech Client, Microsoft Outlook, Physiotools, Policy & Procedures platform and Learning Management System.
Knowledge of Bill of Patient Rights.
Proficiency and knowledge of infection control policies and procedures including hand hygiene and isolation protocols.
Proficiency in the use of department equipment.
Proficiency and knowledge of assessment tools for Registered Kinesiologists including the ability to decide which are best suited for each patient’s assessment needs.
Knowledge necessary to make competent clinical decisions.
Knowledge of treatment modalities and exercises necessary to maximize each treatment outcome.
Knowledge of contraindications, limitations and hazards of treatments and pathologies encountered in the practice.

QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Certifications, Experience, Licensure)

Required:
Registration with the College of Kinesiologists of Ontario.
BCLS certification.

Preferred:
GLA:D certification.
Ergonomic training and experience.
