Unit Summary
The McMaster Children's Hospital Eating Disorder Program is a clinical service for children and adolescents with an eating disorder. The focus of this service is on children and adolescents with a diagnosis of anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa and related eating disorders. The program provides outpatient, day treatment and inpatient care. The inpatient unit provides 6 inpatient beds and 4 day treatment places. Care is provided through a multidisciplinary team consisting of nurses, physicians, dietitian, social workers, psychologists, child life specialist and physiotherapist. The philosophy of care is applied in a family-centered care environment.
Position Summary
The Registered Dietitian (RD) functions as a valuable member of the interdisciplinary team and provides nutritional care to children and adolescents with complex mental health and medical issues related to a range of eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and other specified feeding or eating disorders. The RD brings a comprehensive knowledge and nutritional expertise to the management of children and adolescents with an eating disorder. The RD is responsible to identify best practices, share these principles with the team and incorporate them into practice and patient care. Activities include nutritional assessment, meal planning and nutritional counseling to patients and parents.
The RD is responsible for acting as a resource to other members of the Eating Disorders Team regarding nutritional care. The RD will establish and manage effective therapeutic relationships with children, adolescents and their families. The RD will provide comprehensive dietary care to each patient and family, using knowledge of the medical and mental health components of eating disorders, in a family-centered care setting. The RD will work in a health care setting that fosters collaboration, recognizes the value of all disciplines and team members, and ensures a culture of self-development and learning to ensure the most appropriate delivery of care to all patients and their families.
As a member of the interdisciplinary team of clinicians, the RD will attend rounds, participate in leading/co-leading group activities, communicate with families and caregivers, liaise with community resources as required, as well as manage issues related to nutritional health. The Dietitian will participate in student education, as appropriate, including the training of dietetic interns. The RD brings a strong knowledge of all Ontario legislation that affects the range of considerations including pediatric and adolescent care, health care consent act, and mental health care.
Schedule Work Hours
Monday to Friday, days (may require some evening work). This role is Temporary until August 2026.
Qualifications
Proficiency in both Official Languages would be an asset.
